Frequently Asked Questions About Silicone
It also mentions about the difference between Silicone and TPE.
How long has silicone been used in medical devices?
Medical silicone has been used in medical devices since the 1960’s.
Why are liquid silicone molded parts used for medical applications?
The main reason that liquid medical silicone is used is because it is biologically and toxicologically inert. This means the medical silicone parts will not kill living cells.
What is the operating temperature range of medical silicone rubbers?
The operating temperature range of medical silicone rubber is-180 to 600 degrees F(-118 to 316 degrees C). It should be noted that the temperature has less effect on the physical properties of silicone than any other rubber.
Can medical silicone parts be steam sterilized?
Yes medical silicone parts can be steam sterilized; this includes autoclaving.
What is the effect on medical silicone parts that are autoclaved?
There is no effect on the physical properties when autoclaving medical silicone parts.
Will medical grade silicone cause skin irritations?
Medical grade silicone is hypo-allergenic. Medical silicone is the only know Elastomer that is hypo-allergenic.
Who is the major manufacturer of medical silicones?
The major manufacturers of medical silicone are Wacker Silicones, Dow Silicone, BlueStar Silicones, Shin-Etsu silicones, Momentive Silicones, and NuSil Silicones.
What are the elongation properties of silicone?
Silicone elongation can range from 200% up to 800% depending on which material is selected. This also applies to medical silicones.
What is the catalyst cure systems used for silicone?
The best cure system for medical silicone applications is the platinum cure system. This is due to the fact that this cure system does not produce any extractable. Peroxide curing systems produce extractables and therefore, and not suitable for medical applications because they do not pass biocompatibility testing.
What is post baking of medical silicone parts?
Post baking or post curing of medical silicone parts is done to assure the medical silicone parts are fully crossed linked. If the medical silicone parts are not fully cross linked there could be an effect on compression set as well as out gassing.
Why would you use liquid medical silicone rubber instead of TPE(Thermoplastic Elastomer) for medical applications?
Platinum cures medical silicone rubbers that are fully cross linked do not produce extractables, but some TPE’s do. Liquid silicone rubber has a higher level of biocompatibility when compared to TPE’s.
What colors are available for medical silicone?
Medical silicone is available in a wide choice of colors. Colors matching is also available.
What are some of the common applications for liquid medical grade silicones?
Common applications for liquid medical silicone are: Tubing, Drains, Feeding Tubes, Catheters, Gaskets, Seals, Long and Short Term Implants.
Can liquid silicone be used for food contact and does it meet FDA regulations?
Liquid silicone can be used for food contact and meets FDA regulations. Liquid silicone must be tested and certified by the liquid silicone manufacture.
What are the typical tensile strengths of liquid silicone rubbers?
Typical tensile strengths for liquid silicone rubber are in the range of 4 to 12 MPA.

Re: Frequently Asked Questions About Silicone
because there are some other components not just pure silicone! there is some paint, some oil etc.
anyone (maybe a vet?) out there able to make a test with some doll silicone?
putting it in liquid nitrogen would also be interesting!
