NEW FORUM RULE

Post by Ishtaria »

Hi Folks,

I've just spoken with Bill and he has asked that links posted to other site only go to sites which directly take you to the object that is intended (i.e., that do not require someone to register for an account and then login).

I'll be including the new rule one the list once we move to the new system.

Thanks,
Ish

I take it by this you mean yahoo groups as well?

There are a lot of links here and on the matrix pointed to these groups.

If you don't mind my asking, Why the new rule? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif" />

If it does apply to the matrix, which is part of the doll forum, should I drop the yahoo links there?

I'm tired of clicking on links to get to a photo and end up with a membership page that I have to join some group. It is getting so bad that it is like spam for Yahoo and the like. I only want links directly to the object mentioned in the text of the post so people can see it without people giving out their email address or needing a password.
References to a site needing a password will stay in text format without linking so people know what they are in for. We can discuss these sites but the linking in posts will stop.
JR,
The Matrix is yours to run as you see fit but it is a disappointment to click on a thumbnail and not being able to see the photo without signing up for access before I get to see it.

We will soon have an upload capability so members can link to a photo for their post but I'm sure it will require some supervision.

Maybe it would be sufficient to just require people to flag such links in no uncertain terms, such as "this is a fucking yahoo link" or "clicking on this will take you someplace requiring a membership or similar bullshit". I don't see what difference it makes whether it's an actual link or not as long as people know not to click on it if they don't want to deal with membership/password sites.

A news portal I go to sometimes has links to the Washington Post, who forces you to go through a dipshit registration/survey thing before they'll let you see the damn article. The news portal guys normally put "registration required" on the link so you know not to click it.

Of course I did click it once and told the Washington Post I was a 93-year-old woman from Uganda. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif" />

I want to keep the rule simple. Links must go to the object without a password being required otherwise keep it in text format.

I certianly understand the frustration with that, Bill.

Altough I had'nt noticed that many links posted in the forum to membership pages. The martix has quite a few though.

Well, certainly I have no problem with removing the yahoo links from the matrix. I personally would click on a yahoo link only at gunpoint, and even then I would think long and hard about it. I won't click on the matrix yahoo links even to see if they work. Mike has to test them.

Yahoo is probably the biggest sack of shit in the internet, which of course contains a wide variety of shit sacks.

Aside from our yahoo fanatics Mike and Nada (the yahoo yahoos if you will <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif" /> ), how do other people feel about it? Are the pictures worth the pain of fucking with yahoo? To me they're not.

Fortunately, it's only old dolls on yahoo. The more recent dolls are in the album or on their own sites.

I don't have a problem with it, and I used to hang out on Yahoo and the old yahoo clubs. Too much advertizing, too distracting. Yahoo exists with all its bullshit ads for those who don't have a webpage and want to post pix. Hell, most of the interesting stuff there are reposts of discussions here anyway...

I understand. I've just used Yahoo for years and years and years. I do thank you for tolerating those of us who cut our teeth on Yahoo years ago.

That's why my dolls have a mirror site for them in the doll album too.

I now use the doll album for all my links in forum posts, that works perfect.

That way, I keep my Yahoo friends happy and my doll forum friends happy.

Personally, I'd love to see ALL DOLLS have a site in the doll album, that would be SO fun!

<hr>JR, did you make me an automatic member or something? I know I used Matrix heavily to make decision on what doll to get, but I don't remember signing up and I know I don't use a User Name, nor Password. I'm not sure what I'm missing here... I've really liked the access, though! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif" />

Oh. Some dolls cannot be viewed except through Yahoo. This must be what was meant. I've found that to rather suck. I guess it's the right of doll owners to post their own pics where they want.

Yes, the tragedy is that the dolls exist only on yahoo, not whether or not the matrix links to them.

If you remove the links, the dolls essentially go phantom.

Perhaps I could remove the yahoo links for dolls that exist in multiple places, such as the Charlie Joanne dolls and Mike's dolls, and leave the links for dolls that exist only on yahoo.

Maybe some industrious soul could duplicate these yahoo galleries in the doll album, as was done with a large number of dolls formerly in RDOL.

I removed the yahoo briefcase links a while back, because the damned urls were some of the longest and most complex I had ever seen, and the matrix generation software was choking on them.

As far as warnings are concerned, the matrix cells do mention that a yahoo id is required, though they don't say anything about the other miseries of yahoo, such as the fucking advertising.

But then, some other sites are bad about that too. I consider geocities to be virtually unusable because of the popup shit.

I personally like the rule. To me it is frustrating to read a post then click on a link that is supposed to show you what the poster is referring to, only to be presented with a requirement to register information to see it.

I fell for that in my early days on in the doll forum and have been getting unwanted email from those sites since, I don't do it now. If it requires me to resister, I ain't gonna see it.

my $.02

You've got to remmeber, this rule applies to posts, if you post DO NOT have a link to a site that requires a membership or log-in.

The Doll Matrix is Perfect as it is. Jackrabbit, you've done a fine job with it.

Some dolls have Yahoo groups, MSN groups, etc. and having a link to them makes perfect sense. The doll matrix links are labeled as such so if someone does not like Yahoo, MSN, etc. He can pass on it.

People were having links to sites other than Yahoo groups that required signing up for a membership in their posts also.

Back around 1996, Geocities (currently Geoshities) was a wonderful site. I really like it _ a lot. About 3 or 4 years ago it completed it's task of being a pain in the arse. Now, I avoid it like the plague.
