PHOTOS AND MEMORIES

Amalie is remembering our Grandparents today. Here they are in the late 1930's just before they got married.

Grandma's family owned a general store in the village.

Grandpa was a optics engineer who worked for Bausch and Lomb, as well as Kodak.

To think back then photography was rather rare and expensive. Photos were reserved for special occasions, and taken by professionals. Few actually owned a camera.

For most of the 20th century, most photos required film to be developed. By mid-century, instamatic cameras would automatically process your photos "while you wait", but a vast majority of people would "drop off' their film and pick up their photos up to several days later.

Imagine waiting that long to see if your pictures even came out. Many of us remember having to throw out half the pictures we took because they were out of focus, badly framed, or just blank.

Today photography is digitally instant. Take a picture, see it immediately. Rarely worry about taking a "bad picture", because almost every aspect of your photo can be corrected and improved by photography software.

It's a wonderful blessing to be able to capture moments and memories so easily now.

Sometimes, I wonder if it’s a little bit of a curse tho…

A friend of mine is fond of saying: ‘pics or it didn’t happen’ when I tell him about something I did. I worry sometimes if my own memories of events, people or places I’ve known become more like the photos I’ve taken and less like what my eyes actually saw.

I’ve grown a new appreciation for memories I have no photographic evidence of.

Your Tuesday mood looks cozy Amalie! ❤️

i love pictures as purely a way to preserve my new life. the past 3 1/2 years i've taken thousands of pictures.

Certainly we can be thankful for those mischievous times where camera's didn't exist. but i absolutely wish i had more photos of youth. as far as i know, there are no videos of me for the first 40 years of my life, except for a copy of a high school musical I had the lead in (and i've been bugging someone for YEARS to send me a copy). i'm a bit jealous of those who can watch "home movies" of growing up.
