The 1950's produced some of the most elegant mannequins.

Mannequins during this time and before only showed adult fashions or children, or teenagers dressed as adults. Even though the rise of the teenager was in the 50's. Mannequins of teen fashions didn't appear in store fronts until almost the 60's. Teens were very much seen during this period as being rebellious following the new wild rock and roll music. Adults at first did not approve of this music or the clothing they were wearing.

I have always been fascinated by photographs of mannequins in public places where they are not on display. Here is a war-time photograph in London of rescue workers repairing a pipeline and coming across an unexpected mannequin in 1941.

This is so weird to see for something from a time period we usually think of as less advanced. I’ve only ever seen featureless mannequins in places like big box stores years ago. Never seen anything so detailed or animated as these.

How many will admit they always wanted to in the 1980s and after to be "with" those short cut dress pantyhose female mannequins that you only wished you were locked in that department store over night.

These were the equivalent of the ancient Greek and Roman sculptures in artistry. It could also be said of today's modern Love Dolls.

Pierre Imans produced some of the earliest and most realistic mannequins (see my other thread) . In the 1960s he also created some wonderful unusual ones.

Window displays don't get much more controversial than this. American Apparel shocked pedestrians and bystanders with mannequins displaying nipples and public hair in 2017.

The always controversial retailer got people talking yet again, this time with the store aiming to increase its sales for Valentines day. Apparently they achieved it.
