This may sound like a stupid question to some, but how do you get a picture as small as is required? Modern cameras don't seem to take pictures at that small of a file size, even when cut down. Just wondering how everyone else does it.

Use a photo editor like photoshop or gimp to resize them.

You can resize a photo with most image viewing programs.

View the photo and then look for a menu dropdown, something like 'image - resize' or 'edit - resize'

Then resize the based on pixels, make sure 'maintain aspect ratio' is selected and change the pixels so that the biggest side of the image is 120 pixels (the other side should adjust automatically)

Then save the new resized pic and upload as your avatar.

It's easy once you do it once or twice.

I use XnView or Paint.net

Also most digital cameras include such software or a link to download them.

Also, if anyone wants any pics edited for forum use, ask a staff member and one of us will be happy to do it. Feel free to remove the exif data, or we can do it for you.

My first attempt here came out as little blurry, but it still worked. Thanks

I find that selecting 'Lanczos' for the resample option gives the clearest image.

If you have photoshop:
select the crop tool
in the drop down: choose WxHxResolution
enter 120px in the 1st 2 input fields (width/height)
now you can simply draw a frame around the part of the image you want as an avatar.
this will keep the aspect ratio, resize to the forum requirement, and chose the best method for resizing all automatically

Can someone please help me crop the edges and resize this photo for my avatar. I recently just switched from an iPhone to a Google pixel and I'm still trying to figure out how to use it, and truthfully I've never used any photography or picture editing programs yet, I'm a little slow when it comes to computers and Technology. thank you in advance I do appreciate it.

I've used 'Paint' to resize images easily.

Thank you so much that looks absolutely perfect but one thing I can't click on it to open it up to save it?

I can just find that right at the App Store?

PhotoScape is what I use. You can just crop the image at a 1:1 ratio (which makes it square), and then resize by pixels to 120 with the aspect ratio locked. Takes about a minute tops.

You should be able to just save that image direct from this screen by right clicking it (or on a phone holding your finger down over it till save appears).

Oh, you're using a smartphone/pad/tablet to view TDF.

So, you've got many choices.
