AT&T has acknowledged data leak.
The company has reset the security passcodes of active customers affected,
leaked information "may have included full name, email address, mailing address, phone number, social security number, date of birth, AT&T account number and passcode.
AT&T is reaching out to affected customers via “email or letter” to let them know what data was included

Well, I got an email from AT&T, but they did NOT reset my passcode so I did it today.

They sayeth:
We have discovered that your AT&T account passcode has been compromised, therefore we have proactively reset your passcode.

Our internal teams are working with external cybersecurity experts to analyze the situation. It appears the data is from more than 4 years ago and does not contain personal financial information or call history.

What information was involved?
The information varied by customer and account, but may have included full name, email address, mailing address, phone number, social security number, date of birth, AT&T account number and passcode.

If your sensitive personal information was compromised, we will provide complimentary identity theft and credit monitoring services.
What is AT&T doing?
We’ve taken precautionary measures and reset your passcode, which is an extra layer of protection for your account. When you sign in to your online account or call customer care, we’ll provide details to help you personalize your passcode.

What can you do?
In addition to resetting your AT&T passcode, we encourage customers to remain vigilant by monitoring account activity and credit reports. You can set up free fraud alerts from nationwide credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You can also request and review your free credit report at any time via Freecreditreport.com.

So it effectively stops any attempt to apply for credit in its tracks.
Some say a credit freeze should be a consumer’s default position. “The reality of living in 2024 is your information is going to be stolen, so you need to act accordingly,” said John Dwyer, director of security research at Binary Defense, which works with companies to defend them from cyberattacks. I recommend everyone keep their credit frozen at all times,” Dwyer said. That’s what he’s done for himself since 2013. He briefly unfroze his credit report when he was buying a car and a house, and then re-froze it.

Apparently AT&T could have warned customers about what led to this breach years ago!

Another thing is passwords. of course, those were not compromised, but AT&T most likely did not take proper precautions, but there is a rumor the people were former employees.

My short take-
Choose a password that is atleast 12 characters long and contains a mix of numbers, lower and upper case letters and symbols
Avoid all number-based password
The most secure passwords were those containing a mix of numbers, symbols and different case letters.
Although these could be cracked if seven characters long, a 12-character passwords would take over 200 years to crack.
According to Hive Systems, an adding an extra six characters to this same 12 character password, it would take hackers a jaw-dropping 26 trillion years to break in,

Needless to say, I am checking all my passwords too!
