I recall reading about self-repairing plastics back 15 years ago being a new area scientists were working on. Seems like that would be something special for our community.

In my time in industry I have learned of many plastics that are as durable as steel, but are lighter.

They are called Ultra High Molecular Weight ( UHMW ) plastics, these plastics have a lot of characteristics as steel- they can be drilled, machined, tapped (threaded), can be used in high and low temperature applications, and is considered as self lubricating when used in moving joints.

UHMW's come in square bars, rectangular bars, round bars, and sheets and plates.

This material would make a great material for skeletons that is light weight and strong.

First improvement as Head of engineering - Fix the bullshit TPE plug, water getting inside the body problem. It's inexcusable.

Second, get my Skeleton team in here! Several improvements are necessary here - fix those damn joints. Joints should not get loose, or wear out. Mechanical friction is not the way to go, work it out.
And I want bones. Hip Bones that I can feel. Rib bones I can play piano on. Done properly, our next skeleton will have a full ribcage filled with something light (which will resolve the weight issue as well) and hip bones I can feel.
There is a bonus in the paycheck of whoever can manipulate the joints to make them tight and loose at the whim of the owner. Hell, my cadillac shock absorbers adjust automatically, have for years.

Lastly we need to fix the lube issue. Cant we develop a pussy that doesn't need lube? Or one you only lube up once a month? Work that out!

There are purely mechanical ways to do this, but the added advantage of an electrical method is it would also (slightly) warm the doll, at least near the joints.

If you don't mind a power cord from the wall (too much needed for batteries) then you could use magnetics, which could be smart or manual. Could get pretty complicated, however. Inspired by servo motors, uses permanent magnets on one side of a joint and electromagnets on the other. Engage the coils (or at least, specific ones), and increase the stiffness of a joint at a specific angle range. disengage them all for that joint and it is easy to move. No power and it is all easy to move.

Could have a squeezable switch (or set of) inside each joint area so repositioning a specific joint is all done at that joint. The switches would be normally-closed so when you engage them it turns the magnets off only while holding the switch, to act as a "latch" for the joint stiffness.

It wouldn't be cheap to do, or design, however. The purely mechanical variation is much simpler. That only needs a locking pin that is part of the bolt securing the joint, which you push in from the side of the joint you are moving, thru the "skin". This can either unlock a ratchet system in the joint, or simply decrease the friction of a joint. The former will wear much slower and require less service, but is more complex and expensive and harder to service when that does become necessary. This type of joint already exists commercially, commonly in plastic form for many folding items, but some are metal. It would likely require a custom version for these skeletons.


It is also possible to use actual servo motors, and an external control / power system (it might fit in the ribcage, but it may still need to be powered externally). It doesn't have to be robotic in nature, just a simple "hold" or "loose" state for each joint, commanded via phone app or buttons on a control panel. However, if you're already going this far....

If you go this far, you might as well give it a "real" skeleton, one that is at least vaguely human-style, at least as far as a halloween skeleton goes, or further. This would give the whole thing much more realistic poseability. It's not technically that difficult, but it is likely a lot more expensive. It may also be notably heavier than the hollow metal tube types, depending on the cost level.

Metal skeletons the way they are typically made now should be pretty cheap, in labor and in materials costs. The lighter plastics that are also still strong and stiff but can still be cast in a useful way toward this end, are generally more expensive (sometimes a lot more) than the metal would be, and the labor for the whole process of making the parts and assembling them is longer and costs more.

Lastly we need to fix the lube issue. Cant we develop a pussy that doesn't need lube? Or one you only lube up once a month?

It is possible to create reservoirs inside a space that are squeezed by actions near them, that would do this. There is already such a system, including practical tested designs, in the Hot Wet Pussy thread. It's not a simple and cheap way of doing it that would be likely to be implemented in many dolls, but it could be done in other ways mostly cast right into the doll (but thus also vulnerable to damage and harder to repair).

I had an idea for variable friction joints.
This is one of the things, that if solved would really make quality of life much better.
Not only will it be easier to pose your doll, but you'll also not have the problem of a limb going limp.

The idea is simple - yet figuring out how to make it happen isn't. haha

Since custom lock joints would be expensive...
...what we really need is something that we can be placed into the joint, and that increases or decreases the friction inside.

I've thought of all sorts of methods for this:

• - A spring loaded rubber pad that would press against the joint mechanisms

• • - where you could somehow retract the rubber pad and control the level of friction

• - Some kind of hydraulic system

• • - where you pump up the friction - and release when you need a loose joint

• - An expandable washer inserted into the joint

• • - no idea how this would work (haha)
