3d printed 1/3 BJD, any painting advice?

Post by Edcot »

Just recently got a 3d and found a file set for a 60cm ball-joint doll. Still in the process of printing it.

Was wondering though if anyone has had any experience painting dolls or doing their makeup that could give some helpful tips.
I was thinking of base coating the doll peach or orange, sanding smooth then repainting with the final skin tone of a light ash grey, if too much of the base coat isn't lost. Hoping this would give a more realistic marble of actual skin. Also thinking of highlight facial edges, lips ears nose cheeks, with peach or orange to add some life to the face.

Any tips or creating thoughts would be appreciated.

The porous nature of 3D prints should give a good depth of base coat
I would probably do the surface finishing before applying any coloration :)

If you print PLA, you'll need to sand the material to smooth. If you want, you can then use spraypaint on the individual parts before stringing the doll. For a face, a base coat of mister Super clear or other Matte varnish, then you can use Aquarell pencils and pastels for painting, or acrylic paint with very thin brushes. To fixate the painting, another few coats of varnish.
Looking forward to seeing pictures! I was pondering a 3d printer, but it's a little intimidating for me.

if you use flesh color filament you shouldn't need to paint at all just do makeup. algaeholics over on the UKLDF site printed 2 BJDs.

I've been working on the same thing recently. What I found that worked pretty good for me is:
1. Sand with 120-180 grit paper by hand
2. Follow up with 220 grit (mostly to clean it off)
3. Apply wood filler. Use your finger to evenly spread.
4. Lightly sand with 220 grit paper.
5. Apply a light coat of primer. (I suggest using a rattle can)
6. Sand... again
7. Apply second coat of primer to smooth out any gaps.
8. You guessed it... sand again.
9. Brush off any dust, debris, ect...
10. Spray with a sealer. ( I used a clear acrylic sealer with great results.)
11. Paint. I used cheap acrylic paint myself.
12. Enjoy!

Note: Mine's not perfect by any means, but for a first attempt, I am very pleased with the results so far. Also, no, I have not finished as of yet.

Also, I apparently have no idea how to post a picture of the current progress.

Makes sense. I don't ever really make any posts, mostly just browse the boards.
