Powdering caused blotchy tpe look. What do I do!

Post by Alottahope »

Hello TDFers! I just powdered a brand new TPE doll. The baby powder seems to have made blotchy patches and very inconsistent looking skin on her belly. what should I do to remedy this.
Before I go do anything else. I wanted some feedback. Maybe some of you have had this issue before. I applied it with my hand and it seemed to be caking up on my fingers.
Feedback mush appreciated!

Hi AH, was she particularly tacky/oily? I would say the best thing to do now is to wash off what powder there is and start again once she's nice and dry but use the biggest makeup brush you have to powder her. The only time I've had a little 'clumping' of the baby powder is when I've powdered too soon after doing an oil massage. Now I leave the powdering till the day after if I've done an oiling although, thankfully, my newer gals haven't needed either oiling or powdering, certainly in the first few months.

Sounds like too much powder applied to a doll that was not completely dry or still oily. My method of application is to put the powder or cornstarch in an old stocking and dab it on lightly one area at a time, then spread it out evenly with a large make-up brush. Now, Jyoti being dark skinned, I still get blotchy areas from time to time. For that, I just go over the area in question with a barely damp cloth to remove the excess.

I have not had this problem before when putting baby powder on any of my tpe dolls before. I've had dolls I bought used before though where I could not see any damage visible on the skin with my eyes but once I powdered the doll I was able to see scratches or tiny imperfections that were not visible before until I rubbed baby powder over her body. Alottahope, if I had to guess I would suspect the blotchy skin might have already been there to begin with, you just didn’t notice it till you powdered the doll. Might of happened while being mishandled during shipping, there is also the possibility it's just a defect and she came out of the factory like that. Maybe try massaging a little bit of baby oil in the areas you see that looks blotchy and wait a day to see if it looks better but I bet once you put baby powder on the area you will be able to see it looking blotchy again. Good luck Alottahope ^^, I hope you find a way around this issue

I'm with Mr. Franz on this one.

You guys are so helpful! Wow! I love the stocking idea. So here is my theory. I pulled her from the box and she looked perfect. I use a hoist to lift and then let her hang for inspection. As I spun her around, I was leaving fingerprints very visible. So I thought, hmmm. I better powder her before dressing. So I worked my way from the neck and shoulders down to her torso. By the time I got to her belly, the powder was coagulating on my fingers. So it turned to a paste. I think the "still too oily" comment here is correct. So I dabbed her with baby oil and all is well in the universe. Guess I will just leave her be oily for a while. Thank you so much for all the good advice!

You can use alcohol to clean up some of the excess oils. Just be aware that alcohol will dry out the material. In this case that's a desired result.

I don't know if it applicable - but on my PlatSil doll, scaling happens when I powder. This always seem to happen over time because of the natural oils mixing with the powder.

I was able to remove it with alcohol.

Alcohol will dissolve and evaporate the oils. You have to be careful not to dry out the TPE too much. Over use of alcohol will result in pregnancy. Em, I mean dried out TPE.

Great video, Mon Amour Toujours! We have Sally Beauty Supply about an hour from my town- I will definitely replace my current makeup brush. Thanks (and to Mr. Franz) for the tip about the powder sock. Looks much cleaner and more efficient than trying to use that silly little makeup pad that was included in my doll care kit.
Hadleigh is a fair-skinned WM163C/#188, Harper (#124) is a medium toned WM164D, Kendall is a fair-skinned 163C/#398. All via RLSD.

Yes! Mon Amours video is great. Lots of really helpful exchanges going on here! Grim. Do you mean isopropyl? How do you apply it?

I usually just use it to clean the oils off TPE for applying BodyColor², using TPE Solvent for repairs, or for cleaning orifices. In these cases drying of the TPE is desired, but usually reapplied afterword. TPE needs some oil, but it sounds like your doll has way too much.

I use 99% isopropyl alcohol. I buy it in bulk from Amazon. I usually apply the alcohol to a cloth and wipe the area with the damp cloth. You'll want to be in a well ventilated area. Acetone works pretty well also for cleaning and drying. Much stronger than the alcohol. Main concern is getting too dry. In theory, if you get rid of the excess oil, and reoil an appropriate amount it should be fine. I'd clean the doll with alcohol or acetone. Then just a light oiling afterword. Apply the oil massage it in a little, and wipe it off. Let her sit for an hour or so, then try the powder.
