Hi there, I'm guessing your question is about Rachel, the gal that I did the surgery on? Well here she is, so the answer is yes!...

Just got my new brass tube in the post, it's the next size up from my first attempt with the new fingers so it can accommodate the steel, pvc coated wire. I was really impressed with the RTV silicone as it set nice and firm and really grips the brass tube yet has a bit of flexibility so to my mind is a much better thing to use for fixing the fingers into the palm plate. Obviously what I'm doing isn't comparable to MF's latest 3d printed plate and fingers but rather its my take on utilising the existing palm plate which could be worth doing if the wrist joint is still nice and tight and you don't fancy grinding off the spot weld on the nut to get the plate off. So here's the assembled bits and bobs, 3.5mm (OD) brass tubing, 2mm stranded steel pvc coated high tensile wire, small plastic end caps for finger tips and RTV silicone sealant for fixing the finger 'bones' into the plate, wish me luck!

Thanks adelea, to be honest Rachel is pretty much unrecognisable from when she arrived! I was pleasantly surprised at how well she turned out and picked up some useful experience working with tpe along the way. So, I've just made up the 3 middle fingers for Sophia's hand and they are now in the palm plate and the silicone sealant is in. I shall do the thumb and pinkie tomorrow as it's time for some tea!...

I still cant get over the fact that the TPE will stretch enough to cover them!

Her wireless fingers are what Adara's hands look like :(

Well stay tuned adelea as I have high hopes for this. The fingers won't be as articulated as they would be with the excellent MF replacement fingers and plate but these should, hopefully, look natural and they won't be floppy! I will post a few pics tomorrow when all the fingers are in.

Back to Sophia's hand and the new fingers seem to be fixed into the palm plate ok so time to seal up the hand. Unfortunately the plastic end caps I used are a little too big and so they caused the ends of 2 fingers to split. For the next one I do I've ordered the next size down which should be just right. This hand also got a bit bashed up, especially when I caught it with my drill, so I've had to add a little extra tpe here and there so it's not as neat as I would have liked. Still the fingers are now firm at least. Now the wire I've used isn't any good if you want to pose the fingers, it will bend but springs back. It is very strong though. For my next hand repair I shall be using the same idea but with 2.5mm stranded copper wire which should bend ok but won't be as strong as the other stuff.

Your hand repair looks very good Arthur1960.
With just a cursory glance at her palm you probably wouldn't notice that she's had some work done.
Looking forward to seeing how her next hand repair goes. :D

Thanks djcdoll, yeah it's not too bad but I knew this would be the one that I made mistakes with but I now have a clear idea of what works so whoever gets the next hand makeover should benefit. The stranded steel wire is certainly about as strong as you could wish for but it won't hold a bend very well although it's possible to have the hand in a natural looking pose. At least the fingers have some stiffness again and don't flop about. For the next one I will try 2.5mm stranded copper wire which should bend just fine and with it embedded into the palm plate with brass tube I can't see how it could break again. It was a revelation to me at just how well the RTV silicone adhesive worked for holding the 'bones' in place.

Looks like a good job Arthur!

You were drilling out the existing epoxy, and slipped - which caused the damage you mentioned? So, if we were using something like MFs replacement plates, that wouldn't be an issue? Though removing the existing plate might be?

When I get around to doing Adaras hands, any lessons learned from others along the way will be very welcome!

Hi adelea, yeah, luckily it was only a small Dremel like drill so the damage wasn't too bad, you can see it at the bottom of the palm where I added some extra tpe. Another member has told me that it's possible to get the old epoxy out without drilling so will try that next. Obviously something like MF's replacement palm plate is the way to go so what I'm doing is my attempt at a simple DIY solution where the existing palm plate is used. Removing the spot weld on a joint can be a pain although some seem to have done it fairly easily. I think the next one I will do should look a lot better and I will take what I've learned from this first one. In particular not to be afraid to expose the palm plate completely and then pull back the hand so it's clear of the plate while you work. This will avoid any damage to hand and fingers and the tpe can easily stretch that far. Next week I will make new fingers with the copper wire/brass tubing and I've ordered smaller end tips that will fit better into the finger ends.

Nice finger repair. I like the more simple solutions. Especially reusing the original palm plate as this fits perfectly into the hand.
