Can I wear Barbie Clothes?

Post by scooter_ca »

This is planned to be an ongoing topic about Giorgi trying on Barbie Clothes.
Other 1/6 scale dolls who wear barbie clothes are invited to join in.
This is sort of a subtopic of My Phicens Have No Dresses but focuses in on Barbie clothes.

I have been given two good pieces of advice.
1) Barbie clothes could stain Phicen dolls.
2) Barbie clothes will not fit Phicen dolls.
Therefore you have been warned. Continue on at your own risk.

You're still here? Ok, lets begin.

The main advantage of barbie clothes is that they are dirt cheap.
Phicen outfits can be as expensive as the full size articles that they represent.
There are links to more inexpensive Phicen clothing options, but compared to barbie clothes which can be bought in batches, they are sill quite pricey.
(Yes, I'm a cheap bastard).
However, you do get what your pay for, so the sewing may be a little shoddy and you may need put in a stitch or two.

As for the disadvantages.
1) Staining:
Giorgi is a bit of a nudist.
She puts on an outfit for a photo-shoot but then promptly takes it off.
I would never leave her in these clothes for an extended period.

2) The Fit:
Barbie is smaller, however If the outfit has some stretch to it it can sometimes fit as is.
Other outfits will need some patience and alterations to make them slightly larger.
This is more difficult than what I am used to which is making clothes smaller for my other doll, Daria.
In future postings I hope to explore ways of making outfits larger.

So lets begin with my first purchase of Barbie clothes - a pack of five bathing suits.
Image

The hat, umbrella, and ducky tube did not need amy modifications and were used in a beach photo shoot.
Image

The orange bathing suit was stretchy so could be worn right away.
Image

The flower bathing suit was also stretchy so also fit without modification.
Giorgi wore it backwards because it was sexier that way with the plunging neckline.
Image

Now we come to the problem of the "Thigh Gap".
You'll notice that in the picture of the 5 barbies, the crotch area is very wide, and therefore the clothes are very wide as well.
However in the picture of Giorgi in the flower bathing suit above, she has a very sexy inner thigh area,
That's because the bathing suit was altered.

The purple bathing suit has the same problem.
So out comes the scissors and snip snip.
Since the seam at the side of the bathing suit has how been cut it will need a couple of stitches with needle and thread to stop it from running.
Also since the crotch area is now smaller, it may need a stitch or two to reinforce it.
Image

Will the cut areas fray if I dont' hem them?
Yes, but hemming something this small is a huge pain.
I have been experimenting with flexible adhesive.
I just dampen the entire hem area with the glue.
When it dries it is clear and flexible and the cut areas do not fray.

So now its time to try on the purple bathing suit.
It's a bit of an effort to get it over her hips, but I think that normal for any Phicen clothes.
The shoulder straps that go from the front to the back of the bathing suit are too small.
I snip them where they attach at the back and then convert them to wrapping around her neck.
In this case I just used a bit of scotch tape to join them at the back of her neck.
Image

And how does the back side look?
Image

The two remaining bikinis don't stretch at all and will need more work to fit properly.
This will be explored in a future post.

I hope this is helpful to someone.
Thanks,
scooter

Some nice ideas there scooter and the end result is pretty impressive. Or...maybe Giorgi just makes them look better? *shrugs* hehe

Look forward to seeing more.

I don't have any Phicens, but I do have some 1/6 scale BJD's. Barbie's are a tad smaller in scale, but some outfits do still work, especially stuff made for the new plus size Barbie. Something I discovered completely by accident though, is that Ken's clothes, (Barbie's boyfriend), fit 1/6 female dolls quite well. Even his shoes! No dresses, but a lot of Ken's gear is rather feminine. Hmmm.... wonder if Barbie noticed that...?

I have male 1/6 BJD's as well. For them, G.I Joe duds work just fine, but Ken's things are a bit tight. Want an even better bargain? Hit the dollar store and get some cheap Barbie knockoffs and mug them for their clothes. Got a couple nice outfits that way for just a buck!

Thanks.
Daria and I have fallen quite in love with Giorgi.
I enjoy looking at her pictures and forgetting she's a tiny doll.

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into Ken's clothes.
I should mention that the price of the 5 bathing suits, umbrella, and inner tube were $13 CDN on amazon.ca. My later purchases were from AliExpress which are even less expensive.

I found a site that makes Barbie Doll like figures but ethnically black and made with bigger booties. Material has so far been stain free (I washed every thing and no dye ran at all)..

https://the-fresh-dolls.myshopify.com/

No mods made yet..

I just received 5 more outfits, so I will be trying them soon!!

That's a very interesting site, and quite reasonable.
I see a full length fur coat Giorgi would like.
I have a vision of her in a fur coat, naked underneath, frolicking in the snow.
It snowed last night.
I wonder how long deliveries take.

Incredible! I am soon to get a BJD ["any day now... heh"] and was searching TDF for clothing and happened across this thread. Why am I so interested in dolls now? As a grown man. Anyhow, I was hooked on all your folks' listings and photos of the Phicen line. But when I went to their website most dolls (looking at the female ones) were "out of stock", "discontinued", or both. Hmmm... well, there are dang few for pre-order or coming soon. I guess I won't have to be concerned about clothes for one for a while. 8O (Now, which pre-order do I want? lol) Gotta bookmark this article thread so I know where to buy new "threads" for my next [Phicen] doll!

TDF has opened up a whole new world for me, that's for sure. I do have a 157cm doll, so I'm not totally a newbie... just mostly ignorant of everything else!

Hi Metacog.
Welcome to the mini section of TDF.
Just like you, I stumbled across small dolls a year ago.
I have my Daria, a 100cm doll that I absolutely adore. Being a smaller doll, she is very easy to photograph.
However, Giorgi is even so much easier to pose, with photo sessions that can be as quick as a few minutes.
I never thought I would get attached to a smaller doll, but Giorgi has now become a full member or our synthetic / organik household.

New pictures will be posted in a few minutes. Giorgi want to show her nightie collection.
Thanks,

Giorgi's Six Nighties

In Giorgi's latest adventure she wore a very cute white nightie - https://www.dollforum.com/forum/viewtop ... 1&t=108529
Image

That nightie was part of a collection of 6 from AliExpress.
It includes 6 nighties, six bras, and 6 panties for less that $10 USD.
There was a shipping charge but I bought a selection of different outfits so the charge was only applied once.

The nighties fit great. They slide over her hips with just a little bit of effort, but that's common for all clothes.
Here is Giorgi modelling a couple of them.
Image

The straps over the shoulders are too short for Giorgi.
I snip them where they connect at the back and connect them behind her head with a tiny piece of tape.
Image

And one more pose......
Image

Now, what about the bra and panties?
The bra is usable but the panties are way to small.
Grrrr. I just can't get them over my butt!
Also, this bra is barely connected.

Image

Although the bra is small at the back, it still looks good. I cut off all the straps on this one.
Hey. My eyes are up here!
Image

I plan on trying some experiments with the bra and panties, perhaps using ribbon or eye hooks as connectors, so they are slighty looser.
I post that in a future episode.

Thanks,
scooter.

I was going to respond to the the topic title question, with a "do you reckon they would fit you Scooter" 8O but figured it would be a Georgi deal, so I read on.

No issues from me, you are doing some great arts and craft there, no doubt under Daria stringent supervision.

Thanks scooter (aka blinky??)

And the modeling of Giorgi you posted I think are fantastic! I went to the Phicen website and could not get the order form page to work, so I sent an email to their contact. I received a reply the next day! The rep, Jeannie, gave me a website in the USA to use, in case anyone is interested. [URL: https://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ ] I searched on their changed name in the toystore search: TBLeague. I really like the "Anck Su Namun Princess of Egypt" figure. She can pose with my resin Egyptian Lady of the Nile!

That's a lot of Barbies you have there. Did you buy all of them new? I am wondering since they may cost as much as some women's new clothes! 8O

nice job adapting barbie stuff. most of the things i tried were too narrow, or had ugly closures, or had glitter that gets lodged in the silicon of a phicen. one trick i did stumble on is how monster high shoes can fit phicen - many of the mono color plastic shoes you see sold cheap on ebay for phicen are actually lifted from monster high sets.

it's just a shame you can't get cloth items off of sets without overpaying from a set splitting vendor. i'm always wanting one part from this set, and another part from that set, and i don't see why the companies that make this stuff can't sell more of the parts or just the cloths without including another seamless doll & head we don't need.

i may throw in the towel and spend $200 on a dressed doll, then try to parts off what i don't need on ebay
i'll be lucky if i get half my money back after all the postage and fees - not to mention the time dealing with it all.
