The diy skeleton problem

Post by Mannen »

Hi, new guy here who have been lurking these pages for a couple months now..
Wanting to build myself a cool doll I am having the same problems others have been having before, namely building a good solid skeleton.
We have wire skeletons, pvc tube skeletons, pvc tube skeletons with wire joints etc within these pages.

What I feel is truly lacking is a stickie post with the Open Source DIY doll skeleton, designed and tested by the members of this community.

Anyone else feel the same?

Anyway. My doll skeleton project involves the following:
*Standard 32mm OD, 28mm ID PVC tubing
*3d printed parts
*hardware store metal parts for strength and ease of creation. M6 eye bolts, M8 threaded rod, washers etc etc
*CNC milled plywood.
*I aim for a textile doll but will work on the inner parts of the doll first.

I hope my project is successful. Also I hope to in some way spark the collective imagination so that we some day have a standard DIY skeletal system that new and old community members can go to when in need. Anything I design will certainly be up for grabs.

I'll be back. Thanks for reading.

Hi Mannen and welcome to TDF! :)

Sounds like some interesting stuff you've got in the works.
It will be very cool to see some pics of what you are doing when you get to that point.

You just need to have 5 approved posts to be able to post photos.
Hope to see you back soon!

A skeleton or at least a set of basic joints for 3D Printing would be a dream come true. :)

We know a lot more now than in 2016, like 3D printed parts are usually not terribly durable and many plastics wouldn't survive a molten TPE pour.
Possibly he got to looking at feasibility.

I was looking at this post with interest. Just out of curiosity, what volume of silicone is there in a full size doll? 20 liters?

Yeah, probably not over 20 Liters including the head if it has a foam core.
The doll skin is usually about 1 cm thick max. Big Gel filled tits and ass will add that additional material.

3.0 grams of tpe is about 3.33 cc, so 3 kg of tpe should be about 3.33 liters, not accounting for different blends of course. A skeleton is often 1" tubing so if you do the math based on a doll's weight, then approximate the volume of the skeleton for whatever size doll you're looking at and subtract it the math should be pretty damn close.
That's really the only way to answer this because doll sculpts are all different even at the same height.

Why people do not base skeletons around, y'know, human skeleton?
Since the end goal is doll that feels as realistic as possible, skeleton as realistic as possible is something such doll would benefit from.
Granted some aspects would be different, like longer segments for spine or different jaw design (two that come to mind), but overall starting with human skeleton and then altering it as needed would be good design approach.
How common is that?

Doll skeleton tubing is centered in the foam and rubber.
A human skeleton design has the bones too close to the surface. The rubber will tear.

In other topic I talked about using firmer underlayer (to simulate muscle tonus).
Because the fact that soft dolls are squishy (especially from softer materials) is kinda turn off for me.
Would that prevent softer outer layer from tearing?
Basically padding ribs (and other bones) with more durable material.
