Hey gang, as you can probably guess from my somewhat melodramatic title, I had a little bit of a mishap. My poor Trisha!

I own an AI Allure (the standing model), purchased new about a year ago. The joints have been loosening up over that year, but theyre still a little firm. The neck joint has always been one of the firmest, but I could still adjust it, both for tilting the head up-down and also side-to-side.

Yesterday, I had tilted the head forward and a little to my right. I was trying to tilt it back to vertical by pushing on the side of the head (her left side). Suddenly. I heard a little crack sound. Ah! The head was back to vertical, but something seemed to have broken. The whole neck was now unmoored, and it could sway from side to side. The pivot point seeemd to be a few inches beneath the neck line, maybe about the top of the sternum. The head could still tilt up-down, so that upper joint seemed intact. But now when I try to tilt the head to the side, the whole neck limply translates over a few inches, then flops right back to the middle.

I've been looking around for pictures of the skeleton to see what might have broken, but I haven't found anything. Has this happened to anyone else? Do you know of any skeleton pictures or diagrams?

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, sorry to hear that. Here's a picture of the 4Woods skeleton so I hope that gives you an idea of where the break is. Not sure if this is the same doll skeleton but it's likely to be very similar across the models.

Good luck with the repair. You could take a look in the 4Woods mods and repairs forum but this thread covers a neck injury http://dollforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=163&t=57052

8O Oh Dear, and the hinged necks where supposed to be a better option than the gooseneck.

BTW...here is another Doll Line with a hinged Neck  for those that are always asking....

By the sounds of it this bolt has come adrift

Rather than the section above it snapping.

I fyou can undo the head, look to see if there is any vertical play in the neck joint, as in up or down, just be gentle to ensure that you do not pull the entire joint out of the flesh, in the event the section has parted, or the bolt sheered.

If you get more than a cm of vertical play, then t will be a sheered bolt or snapped segment, if not, it is a loose bolt, allowing the entire joint to torsion out of position.

Good Luck Anung

Thanks for the fast feedback! Your explanation was very clear.

There is almost no vertical play (a few mm at most), implying that it's a loose bolt.

But there's another observation I can't make sense of. It's hard to tell what's going on inside the silicone, but I found a way to get a feel inside. Behind the white plastic head attachment is a small (intentional) hole about 7 mm in diameter. Inside this hole, a little ways beneath the surface, is a rigid plastic tube. I have no idea what it's for (maybe for pockets of air to get out?), but I took advantage of this natural opening. I stuck my finger inside, and could feel all the way down to a bolt that was oriented on the front-back axis, just like the one you pointed to. The bolt was located 11 cm from the top of the white plastic head attachment, also consistent with it being that bolt. The strange thing is this: when I rock the neck from side to side, the bolt I could feel also translates a little, which is not consistent with it being the pivot. I tried to measure the exact pivot point of the neck, and it's around 15 cm beneath the top of the head attachment, 4 cm lower than the bolt. That implies there's something else further down that the neck is pivoting around. I don't see an obvious candidate in the skeleton picture, so maybe I have a different skeleton that actually has a *second* bolt for left-right neck tilt? Odd.

Anyway, with your help I think understand a lot more now than I did before. But I'm still a little confused about what might have gone wrong...

OK then, so when you wiggle the neck joint, with your fingure on the shown bolt is their any movement in that bolt. If there is definate play, this is your culprit, of no play, then we are looking at either the next bolt down (blue arrow) , so do repeat the same tests if you can reach it, and if it is not this one then possibly the screws in the TPE Tee peice have failed or the tee piece has cracked around the screw mounts (red arrow), as the tubular riser section coming out of the top of the inverted grey tee piece has only the one mounting screw (as do all of the tubular sections coming out of the Tee piece), so then this would be the problem.

The higher up tube in the plastic if it comes in from the side or top (yellow arrows) is possiblly a rebate for a grub screw or retaining nut for the mounting bolt to attach the nylon bush to the neck assembly.

Thanks for another helpful post. I think I have a definite diagnosis.

I reached around inside the hole (which is now a little wider), and I found all three bolts in the neck. The top two were very, very tight, so I loosened them a little. I wish 4woods had not made them so tight. Now that they are loose the head is quite easy to position. That's the good news.

There is also some less good news. I could see all the way down to the T pipe, it's white plastic. When I moved the neck, this T pipe didn't move at all. So the neck must have come loose from the T pipe. Cracking around the screw mounts is probably what happened. I didn't see any signs of cracking, but I didn't dig very deep. Another indication, which I should have realized earlier, is that the neck is also loose on the front-back axis, so I can move it around like a joystick (by the way, Trisha is a fantastic Joy Stick!).

I'm a little disappointed that the problem is probably something breaking, and not something that just came loose. If I wanted to try to fix this, what do you think I could do?

Ok..I think you need to get one of the phone endoscope attachments....

for Android....

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5-5mm-Lens-1 ... 1924490250

and for I phone

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-5-7-10-20m ... 2548.l4275

If you can get one that also is good for video mode even better, That way you can ease it into the neck joint, and see what is occuring when you wiggle the neck joint. that way you will know for sure without invasive surgery, and these are not expensive.

Ok, I'll see if I can get one. But I'm not sure what I should be looking for. A broken screw, or maybe a crack in the plastic?

Good advice from Anung there. With the endoscope you can poke it down while you wiggle the head in various positions to see if you can establish definitively where the problem is. It will also help you figure the neck construction. It may just save you from making a longer cut than you need if you know the exact area which has the problem. It's going to involve some surgery anyhow and once you have made a clean cut you can open up the silicone and get at the broken or loose part. When you come to seal up the wound again clean the silicone area with acetate and use sil-poxy or Permatex Flowable Silicone sealant by glueing the deepest part first, allowing it to cure and work your way out until the wound is completely closed. You can use pins and/ or cling film to keep the wound closed while curing. Pin holes tend to just disappear. Have a look at some of the repair threads in the 4Woods forum for further advice on closing the wound.

Good luck.

Either or both, with some toggling, you will definately know it when you see it....and for under 10 bux a handy little tool.

crack -- oh yes, it happened. Sadly that's the truth about this issue.
There's a PVC T-piece with an inner dia. of 22 mm

who connects the skeleton parts of the back spine/shoulder joints/neck rod assy but this PVC T-connector is rather the type used for glued industrial piping constructions which are thicker and stronger as shown in the picture above.

An extra hole/opening was machined to insert the back spine rod.

The green circled part is a custom made neck bolt adapter who's not installed on your doll!
The red circled part is the PVC-T connector you need to replace.

Drawing1.jpg
Drawing1.jpg [ 431.32 KiB | Viewed 2142 times ]

as you can see you need to make a cut into the doll's back who's nearly 2" deep, you need to penetrate into the PU-foam core and you need to free enough access to remove the screw/nut combo of each attached part....and strong fingers because the space is very narrow and tight. That's what you need to do, not nicely but effective.

I would say:
buy a VERY SHARP knife, a RTV-1 gluing silicone tube, Isopropyl alcohol, acetone, the replacement T-connector and proceed to the reparation job.
Dr. siliconestein will assist you when necessary and Mia can also give some thoughts.

8O Damn SF...you just full of good news, I was thinking after getting more intel, that it would be this, but hoping it wasnt.

Still recomend getting the 10 dollar camera scope extension for a look, as now he can see what he is looking for, before cutting.

Oh..BTW...great post SF, had run accross it before, but could not find it.... cheers to team work

That's so right.
On this forum you can't find gold nuggets but very informative threads and posts on doll maintenance and repairs from any kind of dolls which have the value of precious diamonds the day you need them. In the case you can't find an answer we do our best to find one to resolve an issue.

As I'm the moderator of the 4woods section I'm so glad to read the feedback from Anung and I want to thank you for your fast input and helping this member.

Well, instead of the endoscope, I decided to go the direct route. I made an incision into the back, and sure enough, the plastic T was shattered. About 5 pieces. I got them all out, except one. That one has the the left arm (clavicle?) still screwed in. I will need to get a socket wrench to unscrew it.

This looks simple enough that I think I can put it all back together myself. Just one thing missing: a new T piece! I can probably get a basic T from somewhere, but the holes for the nuts and bolts look custom machined. Do I need to do that myself? Maybe I can ask 4woods to send me a replacement...

I'm a little nervous, and I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go on. But it feels really nice to know this community has my back. Thanks guys! :)
