I'd say PayPal may be more afraid of the law suits that may come at them from the various protest groups if it got out the doll companies where using them.
Or better yet the tens of thousands of Boycotts that came from people not using PP because they allowed doll companies to use PP. As opposed to the hundred companies and thousands of users who order the dolls.

I ditched paypal in favor of Square https://squareup.com for my business last year and I haven't looked back. They automatically deposit payments into your account the next business day. Love it.

What would be the disadvantage of using a debit or credit card and bypassing PayPal altogether?

Most people have access to PayPal and feel safe using that online. I do have a Square account but that isn't an option for online payments.

Well, there is no disadvantage as a consumer. As a retailer of "high risk" products there's still the risk of being shut down by traditional merchant account services because they fall under the same regulations of "high risk" products.

The great thing about PayPal is that no third party gets another copy of my credit card number. That's a huge security benefit as there is no stop to database dumps from hackers. PayPal hides everything about the credit card to a merchant. I only take PayPal for payments from my eBay customers. Both parties have protection and sensitive data is not exchanged.

Citi use to have a feature called Virtual Cards that were a one-time use number generated for your account. It had an expiration date of 1 month and it was valid for only the first merchant who charged it. It was a brilliant stop gap until all merchants finally got PayPal.

Of course Citi is currently in maintenance mode as of 2pm PST. They say they still have Virtual Cards available for select cards. And I was going to check mine. Have to do an update later. It could mean a matter of putting in an order or not.
