I think the only real way to get this working, is to load the picture into a paint program, rotate it and then save in the correct orientation.

No, you have to do that yourself. I guess that most don't mind or even like the basic EXIF data, but not the GPS data. It's easy to remove them, no need for specific tools, on Windows explorer.exe can do this.
