One tip I saw on a YouTube video on posing your subject is to be mindful of their arms / hands. After learning hat tip and revisiting some of the very fine pictures uploaded by our talented members I can see how a lot of the good picture do practice mindful hand / arm placement

1. Realism starts with the pose - the most important of which is weight (how a body at rest proper sits on which bones). Dolls get away with being able to pose without the use of actually using muscles. To get real photos, you need to study how the weight rests on the body when posing.

2. Details matter - the hands, the eyes, a misplaced element .. any missed detail can ruin a shot since photo is still (as opposed to video). With a still shot, all the little details are noticeable. With video you get away with a lot more.

3. Facial details - this matter a LOT - since we communicate mostly by facial cues. You'd think that this doesn't matter for a doll, but it does. The pose-able parts of a head are the eyes. This is really important. even the variance in the angle between the two eyeball tells the audience the focal distance of the doll. She can be "looking off in the distance" or "look intently at something close up". Similarly, the right angles can make her "stare deeply at her admirer" or "look beyond the audience". These super subtle cues matter. A lot.

Unless you are doing a wind-in-the-hair shot, she shouldn't be moving at all. This means you can put the camera on a tripod and use a much slower exposure than you would for a human, which keeps the ISO setting and therefore the grain low.
This is such a great point that i didnt think about.

Lighting, lighting, lighting....oh...and lighting. Followed by you...your creativity and imagination. Camera is only 20-25% of a good picture and of that, the right lens for the job is the majority of that percentage. ;)
