also, usual same arguments as everywhere else. Sounds a lot..but a country with 50+ million in it...the govt will want to see a damn sight more than 237k names to be even remotely bothered about it. Why petitions here (in the UK) are pointless. Such a small insignificant percentage for anyone to be concerned about.

Hopefully the court will still rule the same that what is done privately that is already not illegal shouldn't be so just because some people think it should. But the President might pander if he or she must respond.

Cutting vegetables privately = you might run out cutting people? Dumb slippery slopes like these, man. I am interested though in how their court interpret pornography. Isn't that personal use as well?

It's a shame that Western countries, and countries that in the past embraced a lot of Western values, are getting less and less liberal and tolerant

and host have to provide evidence to have enough space ) at least one spare bedroom ) and police certificate of good behaviour ) also what are factory and storage condition ) dolls should also have rights!

Should we start some petition as well? Lol ... And dolls should also have right to vote!

Not too surprising to see this coming out of South Korea. Relatively conservative and conservative religious thinking when it comes to sexual matters, or at least the outward display of anything sexual. Everything is pretty PG13.

As an aside, I find it somewhat ironic that the Koreans will allow imports from Japan, given the issues the two countries have had - and have.

Still, the more conservative countries are, the more issues with child pregnancy ... with sexual abuse ... don't fight dolls, fight abuse, fight ignorance, fight sex crime.

but I think SK is still technically in a war with NK/ China.

That photo looks like my dream bedroom. Seriously though there's some claims in there that probably cannot be backed up by evidence. You should think their government would ask for such compiled data for due diligence.

SEOUL (Reuters) - A petition calling for a ban on importing life-size sex dolls into South Korea has gathered nearly a quarter million signatures as of Friday, passing a threshold that requires the president’s office to respond to the matter.

While sex dolls are not illegal in South Korea, government customs agencies had blocked their import under a law that restricts materials that “corrupt public morals.”

However, the Seoul High Court said in January that sex dolls were for personal use and should be treated differently than pornography, which is heavily restricted under South Korean law. That decision was upheld by the supreme court in June.

The ruling has sparked a backlash, with one petition filed with the presidential Blue House gathering more than 237,000 signatures. The unidentified author of the petition argued that an influx of imported sex dolls could lead to an increase in sex crimes.

A spokesman for Incheon Main Customs said they had allowed imports from Japan, but are still reviewing whether to release imported dolls from China.

The boss of the distributing company which challenged the earlier customs agency ruling said it could not provide total figures for the number of sex dolls imported into South Korea.

But Lee Sang-jin said there had been “a lot of individuals” traveling overseas to bring back dolls since the court ruling. Lee is CEO of MSHarmony Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of MSJL Co. Ltd.

Life-size dolls can cost from 1 million won ($840) to 20 million won ($16,750), depending on options and materials such as silicon skin, eye color and body heating systems to make them feel more like a human being.

The author of the petition argued that the customisable features of some dolls could be used to create copies of real people, a concern that Lee dismissed as unfounded.
