How to make a mannequin head from scratch

Post by SculptorGuy »

Hello, I wanted to introduce myself to the mannequin section of this site. I'm an artist who makes mannequin heads, mostly for a living as of late. Recently I did work for a Batman exhibit, something I'm still working on now. I have one last sculpt (unless given more to do) of Eartha Kitt and need to finish her in 2 more weeks. That said I made a 20 or so minute long video of how I make the heads themselves from start to finished casting. This is just one way to make them obviously, there are more traditional ways to do it too. But if anyone wants to give these methods a try, here's how it can be done:

By the way I am not the person to paint them or add the realistic eyes. There's an artist on the east coast named David from Dash N Dazzle (maybe some of you here know him) who does all the air brushing and the finish work. You can see a gallery of how the end product looks here on his site. Just a disclaimer, I am not affiliated with him in terms of a business. My clients who have sculpts made just send my stuff to him:

Davids an amazing artist and I think has been doing that sort of work for 30 or 40 years. I just wanted to share as this page seems to have a lot of people who appreciate the work that goes into these creations.

Very cool, thanks for the info! I'm on the journey to making a mannequin from scratch and I know the face will be the hardest part. Much respect for what you do.

wow, that is impressive. Are you able to make any celebrity replica? How much do you charge? and if you know, how much does David charge?
