Thanks guys! Someone asked me a while ago which was my favorite doll? I told them it was the one I am currently shooting.
Part of our inspiration sparks when the doll in front of the lens becomes the muse! Then Its up us as photographers to capture the essence of life in our dolls!

This photo is absolutely superb and a good example to people taking photos of dolls including the manufacturers - it's the eyes. So often one sees a blank stare, or worse a blank stare somewhere else. Getting the doll to look askance like this, to one side and looking at the camera with the "eye-line" right (ie the line connecting eyes to lens) is part of the armoury of important tricks that doll photographers and portraitists get up to in contrast to mere product photographers. Many manufacturers use product photographers for their marketing, and it shows.

The other hard thing about eyes is the position of the iris within the eye area. It's rarely equal, mid way, and remaining like that gives the impression of the spaced out stare. As here, the iris is more up than down with the upper eyelid partially covering the upper quartile.

AH's photos are good instruction - if studied, he is a good master.

Hey Harem. I'm glad you approve but there is not just one way to position the eyes. Yes the look (into the camera) of a real girl or doll engages the viewer. Her eye contact allows the thought of "this girl wants me" and seems obtainable. It also invites us in to the soul and personality of the model. This eye position has been the standard for the Playboy and Penthouse centerfolds for eons. The model must make the connection to the viewer to sell more magazines. The "blank look or stare somewhere else" can work to evoke other emotional responses like in the fashion world. You may notice that a lot of fashion photographs show the models eyes elsewhere as to convey an unobtainable look, like she is too good for the viewer. The viewer subliminally thinks, if I buy that make up or pair of glasses I too can be like that, untouchable. Lee Freeman Playboy photographer talks about this in her online bodoir workshop at creative live.com. Quite interesting how the models eyes can work both markets. I like both positions but it depends on what I am trying to establish as a narrative for a particular photo. Most of my narratives revolve around my dolls sexuality and desire for sex with the viewer.

Yes - your observations on looking at us and not are spot on. There's an example of this in the photo of Rose in "The Story of Rose" where she's sitting on the sofa contemplating what the other girls are telling her viewtopic.php?p=1136428#p1136428 . . . although looking at that photo we don't see the eyes but know where they're looking.

But this is an area which many manufacturer's photographers are oblivious and we see no empathy between them and the product as an abstraction of a human being and them, and thus the viewer.

Of course sometimes we're stuck with old generation dolls whose eyes don't move and then we have to work with that as we can. But that's not the case with the modern generation dolls.

So much of photographing dolls is a matter of body language, the eyes, and much more, and you have this down to a tee.
