Insider article about a lookalike doll

Post by CF »

This does not appear to have been posted anywhere on TDF:

Some interesting comments, but for personal reasons it was this paragraph that made me jump in my chair:

‘The next day, after another member of the forum suggested the doll should be modified to have features that resembled Kim Kardashian West, the "irontechdoll" account shared four photos of Cohen Aris and said the new doll was "inspired by this beautiful lady."’

The Kardashian suggestion? That came from me. :)

I can only think this sort of thing, even if not legally actionable, is not good for the image of the doll industry. And in this case, if true, to me crosses the line between complementary and flattering to frankly, kinda creepy.

Now, honestly, if you are an attractive celebrity, model, actress, athlete, talking head, you don’t have to be a porn star, there are doubtless thousands of men masturbating to fantasies of you. You know this. Is the idea of them having sex with a doll that looks like you significantly more disturbing than the idea of them stroking to your photograph, or is it simply the fact that you were not even asked for permission to use your likeness? That’s actually an honest question.

If a doll looks like, almost exactly like, a certain person and is designed with that intent, I think that person’s permission should be obtained. Or at least, perhaps a “no objection but not endorsed” acknowledgement could be sought and agreed to.
Blonde, brunette redhead?
Brunette
Slim, athletic, voluptuous?
Athletic.
Demure, aggressive, sleazy? Be honest.
Sleazy ...
Demure

I can't speak to other countries but I'm fairly certain that U.S. law considers someone's likeness their legal property, and if you're selling products with someone's image then said image needs to be licensed. There are probably ways to skirt the law though, by falling out of a particular similarity range, but it seems like a dangerous game to play as a manufacturer. Elsa Babe has their Molly Redwolf model, but I'm pretty sure that was a collaboration between the manufacturer and the content creator. Im not sure how companies like the one making the unbelievable Tifa doll haven't been taken to court yet.
