Well, I haven't posted here for a couple of weeks...I'm still feeling the lingering after-effects of my bout with COVID. Anyway, these are two quick photo's of Nagisa with the last of my Osaka fans- they are made in the ancient court style where the Chinese influence was huge in Japanese art, architecture, and in other imperial matters. Confucian influence runs throughout the corridor between Naniwa Bay/Osaka up to Kyoto and Omi (imperial city founded by Tenji-tenno, built using Confucian architectural style).

The folding fans were designed to be tucked discreetly up the sleeves of the hanfu, and later kosode/kimono/yukata. Both are made from lacquered bamboo ends, with the ribs made from blackened bamboo strips. The paper is quite old, but the paintings are still in good shape. Normally one would be pulled out and flipped open to gently fan the face- important cooling especially in the summers where courtier women were still required to wear twelve layers (a silk kosode, followed by eleven different kimono).

Thanks for posting the photos of the fans. It seems they are still in good,
if not excellent condition. And thanks, too, for the historical notes.
I, for one, cannot even begin to imagine what those poor people with
their multi-layered clothing must have gone through, given the hot, humid
nature of Japanese summers - even if the separate garments were thin.

Anyway, take care of yourself, and best wishes for a quick and complete
recovery. Being sick is never any fun.

My pleasure, the workmanship is the only reason I can think of for them to have lasted as well as they have. I think they may have been a gift from one of my mother's colleagues when we lived in Osaka. And I hear you about the clothing and the heat, but also protection from the hordes of mosquitoes. I'd like to know the secret to survival before the use of silk lol.

Dressing a doll in twelve layers of clothing: I guess it must be a good exercise in patience and Confucian self-control!

Nagisa confirms that a fan can be an extremely effective seduction tool.

Dressing the required twelve layers probably would require more hands than my two, and go rather slow. Undressing might just be faster though *cough* or at least done seductively lol.

Which lips? Um...er...right! More pics over the next couple of days. I'm still geeked at how light weight she is (especially compared to Rinko...don't tell her I said that!). Tell Nessa thanks from Nachan, haha she's beet red.
