How to make a doll look alive...

No matter how great your camera might be, it is how you apply your skills that makes the difference between an OK shot and a great shot. Here you can talk technical, talk creative, share your techniques, lighting, and digital editing. This is where we can all help each other to take better photos.
If you post a photo here and are looking for a critique, you should be prepared for honest criticism even if it hurts. It will only help to make us better photographers.

Back on topic, eyes are key, next are hands. If you want your doll to look alive, be sure that arms and hands and fingers are posed natural. So often it is fingers that show that it is not a human. Do take your time posing hands and fingers. Ask yourself if it is natural. How would you have your hands?

The pose. It’s all about the pose imo, you can make any doll come alive if you can pose her.

For lipstick I use the shimmer eyeshadow powder, it gives the look of lip gloss without the mess

Great suggestions! I haven't tried any of these yet. For me so far, it's been lighting, angle, and makeup. I am still learning a lot. Here's the most recent pic of Saki.

Maybe not everyone can show their doll in front of a window, but natural light from outside brings the best to me, the eyes and skin comes alive in the picca, in rl the doll does look that way, but to capture that look into a picca works the best for me with just natural light.

If should work with a set up of lightening equipment, do it with such umbrella in mine opinion, you will not see the fake light reflection into the eyes, sometimes you see circles in the eyes, bc the lightening equipment is round for example, maybe milky glas in front of the lightening will work as well to dont get wrong light reflections into the eyes.

And yes as mentioned here already, the pose, look to yourself how you hold something into your hand and work the hand/fingers of the doll to the same as you do or let the eyes look really to something or into the camera, just play with the eyes till you got that sweet spot.

But I think most of all to develope your own style, is like a signature of the artist, dont be afraid to experiment and I also dont work on something if I dont feel good, to feel good is the basic of making something outstanding.
