Question about Username

Is it possible to change my username now that I have an account or is this permanent? I was reading that accounts can only be disabled, not deleted, so I imagine if an account is disabled and then enabled again, the username will remain. Also, the inability to edit a username in the User Control Panel makes me think that unless an admin is able to make a change, it is permanent.
