I didn't get a chance to finish the story from the other day, when Paula showed up to collect those proposals for Dan Cole. So I guess I'll do that now.

NEXT: the night out with Paula...

Amber sent Cole a text telling him that we were taking Paula to dinner. She said he was cool with it.

And that meant Amber was getting a chance to dress Paula up, something that she desperately wanted to do. After all, when Paula was living with us late last year, Amber had a real thing for treating the poor girl like a pet, and she was always playing with Paula’s hair or putting things on her. Now she was getting to do it for a night out.

And in a way it was sweet. But it was also a little creepy. Amber is generally straight, but there’s a slightly bi-curious thing she has going that I want to discourage. I mean, there’s some potential for something hot in that, but it’s almost assuredly going to lead to complications.

And I hate complications.

Anyway, this was getting off to exactly the wrong kind of start…

We took Paula home, and as I was driving away I saw her kneeling on the front porch as she waited for Cole to open the door.

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised.

And when we got home I sent Rachel a text. "Hey," I said, "I think it would be a good idea if your contacts looked into Dan Cole."

"Why?" she texted back.

"We just took Paula to dinner and I've got a very, very weird vibe about Cole right now."

"Paranoid!" Rachel texted back, with a smiley-face emoji.

"Maybe," I wrote. "But can we do it anyway?"

"Sure," she responded. "I'll circle back when I get something."

Then it was time to talk to Amber, who had been nervous and irritable on the way home.

"OK, honey, it's time for us to have a talk."

I could hear Amber sobbing quietly in the night.

But early the next morning I had a meeting with Dave Killearn, who was the regional manager for that company out of Houston that we've been in competition with.

"Hey, Oscar, I really appreciate you taking this meeting. Look, we're in an all-out war and this is, frankly, too small a market for the kind of fight we're in. it's better if we cooperate."

He pushed a piece of paper across the desk to me.

"I don't know," I said. "It's a little lean. But the bigger problem is that our business is based on an app..."

"Oh yeah. We know all about the app. It's brilliant. It's a separate discussion, though, because we know you have some copyright issues when it comes to marketing the app."

"You've done your homework. The thing is, to make the app commercially viable on its own, I'd have to recode it from scratch, and..."

"We have the people who can do that. It's the interface and adaptivity we like about it. We'll buy it from you, recode it and then we'll give you a piece of what we make on it. Here..."

He pushed another piece of paper across the desk to me, and between the up-front payment and the proposed royalties all of a sudden I was looking at being independently wealthy for the rest of my life.

"I don't think I want your job, Dave," I said.

"Hah! I don't blame you. So do we have a deal?"

"Give me a day or two to think about it. But I do like what I'm seeing."

We shook hands, and I drove home thinking this was a gigantic moment in my life.

So why did it feel so empty? And why did I still have a bad feeling in my gut?

I called Stella, because I hadn't talked to her in a while, and asked her if she was free for lunch.

"Of course," she said, and we met at a little place in the neighborhood.

But when I saw her...

"That's a nice choker, Stella. It seems like those are really in style."

I'm already pretty steamed at Amber, because she won't tell me what's going on even though I've seen her text messages with Cole and I know he's doing something with her. But you?
