Simple, poor mans doll head stand

Post by MourningWood »

I saw doll head stands are ridiculously priced ($50ish) for what they were. Picked up some stuff from the dollar store and hardware from aliexpress and made these M16 doll head stands.

The breakdown (all in CAD dollars):
Plastic bowl: 83 cents ($2.50 for 3)
M16 100mm bolt: $7.04
M16 Washer x 2: $4.92
M16 Lock nut: $1.82
🟰 $14.61 CAD ($11.08 USD)

Tools:
15/16 socket or wrench
5/8 drill bit and drill (I recommend step down for plastic but regular bit works of careful)

I needed something with shallow depth like a bowl to clear the bolt head. Drilled out the centre to 5/8 with a step down bit. Go slow and wear eye protection, plastic is brittle and sends shrapnel! Put a washer on each end, put the bolt through and tightened. Simple to do, took me like 30 mins to make 4. I’m not sure I’m allowed to post aliexpress links.

Hope this helps!

Nice work! Elegant, simple, and stylish. Thanks for posting your images- I made a head stand out of similar metal bits with a wooden base and it's quite utilitarian. I like yours a lot more.

Yea, I was looking for something, but I'm gonna just have a go at making that instead (If I can get the parts). Cheers.

I have several of those- None of them are the right size to fit. So you gotta know the size. Still not a bad idea and even cheaper!

My first version was wood but it costed a bit more and I didn’t have the right tool to countersink a bolt head that size, had to use a dremel.

If I had a drill bit the size of the bolt head, I could make one piece hole M16, then drill two more pieces the size of the bolt head. Glue it all together and the bolt head would sit flush.

I had an idea of cutting down a tree, then slicing off the right thickness I want. Putting a nice stain. But I got lazy and there’s no trees to cut down 😂

That's similar to the one that I made. I ran into the same issue with the large bolt head, so I just screwed four rubber feet to the bottom.
