Re: Adobe Creative Cloud/Lightroom
That image looks great! I'm not really an expert at PS or LR, but I work with people who are. I've been using PS for a while now and honestly I don't know what I'd do without it. I tried GIMP, but found it a little less intuitive (not that PS is exactly intuitive though. lol). That was probably mostly due to the fact that I was already more familiar with PS. I started using LR earlier this year and I think if you're going for just a straight up, clean photo you can do most everything you would need to do right in LR.
I like to mess around in PS and am an admitted over-retoucher sometimes. But I do pics for me first, and I like it, so... lol Anyway, there's an awful lot to learn in PS, and I'm always finding new things to try. But it does what it does really well once you know how to do it. I'd be happy to help with anything that I can, but, like I said, I'm not really an expert at it.
I should add, it's only as good as your eye is. But from what I've seen, you have a good eye for photography so no worries there.
Have fun with it! After a year with it I think you'll agree that it's indespensible.
Cheers

Re: Adobe Creative Cloud/Lightroom
I have my own beliefs as to why lightroom exists, but I will keep those to myself to save any future arguments in the thread.
As for your image of Hiyoko, very nice image indeed. I like it. Curious though about the two light-spots in her right eye. But the shadows and contrast are nice, if anything I would have reduced ever so slightly the overall brightness and just upped the clarity/sharpness a tad...but that's personal preferences and nothing more. we all develop a 'style' to our images over time.

Re: Adobe Creative Cloud/Lightroom
As I've mentioned in other writings, I've got some old, long ago photography experience, but no little or nothing about digital. So, I play with things like clarity, sharpness, haze removal but still not 100% sure of what I'm trying to accomplish. Also, the monitor on my cheap laptop could be better, so I sometimes struggle to see what I'm actually affecting with that fine tuning. I probably should invest in a better monitor.
Lastly, I'm somewhat surprised there aren't more posts in this section of the forum. Be great if there was a series of threads that focus unique tools, techniques, digital properties, fixes, etc, etc. Like a Workshop series.

Re: Adobe Creative Cloud/Lightroom
As for eyes, I wouldn't remove (maybe soften slightly perhaps)...but was more in her left eye there is only one spot reflection...but two in her right eye. Unless was just at a weird angle the other eye didn't catch both, but if removing, just remove the extra so both eyes are matching (many magazine jobs will actually add in the catch lights in post). It's a something or nothing issue though, as said, was just curious as to why the other eye didn't catch them both. But feel free to hit me up in PM if there's anything you want to ask about (or if want me to send me examples for opinion etc).
As for workshop type stuff and tutorials on here...it' something that could work but in all honesty it would probably create more problems than it solved in some ways. The fact is, everything can be done about 8 different ways in Photoshop (one of the beauties of it I think personally) and many people will advice different ways of doing a certain job/trick etc...a certain technique, when a different way of doing it might suit someone else better. Also the actual 'teacher' matters to varying degree's Having literally watched well into the hundreds of videos on YouTube, some folk just seem better at explaining something than others (always good to learn diff techniques and keep up to date with new tools in new versions). I could see a similar issue arising here hehe.
As for hardware...many professionals use laptops...I'm not sure I could ever cope using PS on such a small scree, I've just got used to a huge monitor. Though I do always check my work on my second monitor as I think it displays colour better and more true than my main working screen. But your image is excellent again though, really nice 'natural' edits and that's something we should all go for (so it doesn't look overly edited, though that style in itself can also be appealing).

Re: Adobe Creative Cloud/Lightroom
i must say that i also wonder why there isn't much more happening in this section.
As for your question, or request: i say that it doesn't matter what tools you are using.
It is only important what you want to achieve.
For example, a DOF shot can be nice if you want to do a portrait photo, no question.
But at first i would try to do that within the camera (those smartphone cams are getting incredibly good).
Of course, with LightRoom (i am excited to try it on my ipad) or PS or even GIMP (and many other tools and apps), you can do these kinds of photos.
I am not an expert at anything i do besides my main job, so i can't tell you what you could do better in that case.
As an encouraged 'hobby creator' though, i can say that your photo looks great at first.
But when i zoom in, i can see some graininess and i ask myself where that comes from (camera or post-editing).
Thanks and best regards,
HD

Re: Adobe Creative Cloud/Lightroom
Personally I use Lightroom only. From camera import to managing my catalogues and libraries...
And then to all my photo adjustment needs, basic editing from cropping and geometry corrections to color, exposure and other tonal adjustments.
I rarely use Photoshop, since I don't do actual alterations to my images.
If only would find some more time to take pictures

Thanks for your thoughts HD. The grain you saw in the photo was in the edit. I actually increased the grain a bit. Just experimenting, sometimes a little grain is good.hansdampf21 wrote:Hi,

EDIT: since i'm stupidly repeating 'a lot'... why don't you ask Alottahope, the master of photography himself?

Re: Adobe Creative Cloud/Lightroom
I don't use LR much. I have it and have learned some of the features but really like Bridge for making my adjustments, then PS for my final editing, filter application and compositing.
Since I joined this forum, I've learned from the best as much as from everyone else here and elsewhere! There is an expanse of knowledge in the world of photography and having joined in on this treadmill, it's become such a deeply meaningful hobby for me.
I might recommend creative live. It has many workshops to indulge in. I have found online tutorials and workshops to be the catilyst to progressive growth. Some of these workshops have taught me to plan from the very beginning. For Example. If I am going to composite a doll onto a different background. Study the light in the background then pose my model with matching light.
The end result for me must be believable. Simple planning can yield gratifying results!
Always keep it simple and grow from there! Billy! You obviously have an eye, you will benefit in large volume from making this leap. BTW, great photo! Catchlights are rarely the exact same in both eyes. I try to avoid them when they appear on the whites of the eye.
