NEW CHANGES: Linking Images in Posts at TDF (Public Topic)

Post by Bianca »

XXX = maximum allowable image displayed in a post. It does nto affect url links to larger photos.

The system is currently set for 600 Owing to complaints about large photos causing slow forum page load times and necessitating horizontal scrolling, TDF is limiting maximum photo dimensions to display in forum posts. To this extent we have also implemented new features to address the issue as stated below: (Please take poll)

a) The recommended method of adding photos to your posts is by using the attachments feature. Any images larger than ### pixels wide will be represented by a ### pixel image with a link to the full size image.

b) For those linking to the Doll Album or Doll Harem you should use the intermediate photo from your gallery (it is the 600 pixel wide image over the thumbs) You could link it to your full size photo This will make loads faster and prevent horizontal screen scrolling. If the image is actually bigger than 600 (or allowable) wide use the

This is a 1024 wide photo:

This is a 1280 wide photo diplayed full size using the img command:

Cool stuff, but a small bubble to burst, the Doll Album is set to a maximum of 600 pixels in either direction for the resized pics...

EDIT: I see the Doll Album configuration has been changed to 450, it was 600 before... I don't think it's wise to change that, because all the large Doll Album pics are still resized to 600 pixels...

And seeing our banner is also 600 pixels wide, I don't see any harm in having pics on the forum that have a maximum of 600 pixels wide, why change, what worked for all these years?

A couple of questions here. I noticed, BTW the addition of an [ imgthb ] button.

Does using this button also create a link to the larger photo?

Does using the thumbnail image button...

a) Create a new, smaller image which is attached to the post?

...or...

b) Does it simply add size attributes to the linked image?

I'm hoping a), primarily because of bandwidth and "theft" issues, which can also cause complaints of a worse kind. :(

Well it seems I'm having a bit of an issue with this, when I preview the link to confirm it's working, I can't get back to the new post page to submit the post, the web page just expires and the post is lost before I can :?

Unfortunately the imgthm command only resizes the photo. This is why we prefer members use the attachment command, which uses only the band width for the resized photo. Also this guarantees the photo never becomes an invalid link owing to members moving or reorganizing their galleries.

So attachments are best,

Actulaly the intermediate photos in the Doll Album canbe resized by the system.

True the advertising banner is 600 wide, however there isnothign else to either side ot it unlike the forums posts which are within margins.

The band width requirements for a 600 pixel image over a 450 pixel image are more than double.
That means a 600 pixel image on a page would require the same band width and load time as two 450 pixel images.
An 800 x 600 pixel photo makes 3.5 times the demand and a 1024 x 768 photo requires 5.8 times the space and bandwidth.

That's what I was hoping: I attach a large photo (say 1024 X 768) And the forum shrinks it for fast loading on the thread, but click on it and you get the full size. All on the same server = less bandwidth.

thanx :)

I use antiquated equipment to visit the TDF a P-II 180 for Amy's account and an P-III 800 for myself, both WIN98SE. I have had delay issues with the "new" forum pages loading wether or not they have pictures. This was never a problem with the old forum. As to picture size I use 1024 for my monitors so any larger causes me to have to scroll left & right to read a topic.

[imghtm] should not scale up small images

Post by tchon »

I agree with HawgCallr: it seems the new [imghtm] scaled all images to 600px, even if they are actually *smaller*.
This makes smaller images look "pixelated" and less attractive. Any way to fix that?

Just use the IMG tag instead, if the picture is smaller than 600 pixels.

You're trying to use HTML to show your pictures, but HTML is no longer used in this new version of the forum.

The only thing you can use to show a pic is the BBCode tags.

In this case, the IMG tag... like this:

[img]http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak ... 0232_n.jpg[/img]
(I've disabled my BBCode so you can see this, usually it shows the pic)

Or you can upload directly to the forum, by using the Attacments found at the bottom of the post screen.
