RTV Silicone safe to use with TPE?

Post by Kaori »

Is it safe to use RTV Silicone caulk with TPE?

I'm going to order a TPE insert and perform some trials but I thought I'd open the discussion to invite comments from those of you with experience in this.

I'm wondering about how to prepare the surface, I'm thinking it'll need to be thoroughly degreased.

It sticks at first, but the adhesion fails after a week or two, according to one who tried using silicone as an adhesive for TPE.

I would like to show you what happens, if you are using silicone adhesive / RTV silicone adhesive with TPE.

Here you can see 3 different silicone adhesives and how it looks like applied on TPE.
From top to bottom:
1. Shin-Etsu 1 Component RTV (came with my 4woods silicone doll / is of thick consistency)
2. Wacker Elastosil E41 RTV-1 (is of thin consistency and very easy to handle for silicone repair)
3. Permatex Clear RTV silicone #80050 (thick consistency / mentioned from TDF user as "TPE glue")

On the left side you can see the applied silicone adhesives (enlarged) and on the right side how the silicone adhesives have been easily removed with a "finger wipe" after the curing time.
(The small cuts inside the TPE are old, because it is a test piece)
2.jpg

As you can see, nothing happened to the TPE surface.
Silicone adhesive includes acetic acid and that does no liquefaction or dissolution inside the TPE structure.
Thinning silicone adhesive with solvents for making it more aggressiv against TPE does also not bring an effect, because the acetic acid within the compound prevents this all the time.

You can use that for eyelashes eyebrows and sealing makeup
I'm going to order a TPE insert and perform some trials
Do not use it as a repair agent for tears. No good hold on high stress area.
but I thought I'd open the discussion to invite comments from those of you with experience in this.

Prepare your surfaces with 75% isopropyl rubbing alcohol
Warning not recommended for "soft" tpe material

Thanks Indigo20 I was curious whether the acetic acid would damage TPE. I did some tests with neutral cure and had the same results as you, but without pretty pictures.

Could you use neutral cure maybe?

The one thing I observed is that the silicone remains unset when in the absence of air (as it would in the tube from where it's stored).
So the applications will be limited to the surface.

Thanks samara78 *(you quoted me and responded to me inside the quotes btw)

Its actually the absence of humidity( water), not air( oxygen).

Kind regards.

I have been using the permatex with my TPE lady, and although it does work, it is not stretchy and has limited use in non stress areas mostly. The area between the legs was repaired and it holds the TPE but not a perfect repair. At least it has not got worse. Cuts are easily fixed with this glue, and I avoid TPE solvent at all costs as I have had no luck in bonding and it made the area worse. So that's why I went with the silicone route.

That's really helpful. For avoidance of doubt it's the flowable silicone for windshield repair that is the Permatex product. It's been taken over by a different brand so seeking out the windshield product is important.

Do you use permatex to inject under the foot of TPE and silicone dolls to avoid foot damage?

Best wishes

has anyone tested a tin cure silicone (as compared to the acetic acid type)?
Just curious about whether those are compatible with TPE
