My Quest for an Anthropomorphic Doll

Post by roninfiertze »

Greetings!

I have long wanted a company to offer a doll with a better level of detail, internal skeleton and which appeals to the side of me that really digs furries. Some have made dolls before which either had wire skeletons, low or baggy details, and little appeal to me visually.

Stage 1:
A few months ago I set out to solve this for myself. I contacted 3 doll makers about ordering a fully custom anthro, and was basically told by all that regardless of money they had zero interest in developing such a product. Shortly after that I began tinkering and ordered a lot of long-pile fur to work with, expecting to use my old WM TPE doll as a base for the work. While I did have some luck adhering fur swatches to the TPE, it wasn't permanent and did not meet my desire for durability or look. Since then I have spent time practicing different cuts for the fur, learning what works and what doesn't, and brainstorming for a different doll to use as a base.

Stage 2:

I'll preface this by saying, I have no past experience working with plushies or any sort of fabric detail. I've sewn some torn pants, that's it... This is a learning project and I'm sure someone with real experience could do better.

Enter, the Aimee fabric doll from 1am (HappyDoll I believe is the brand?), a 130cm tall inexpensive experiment that I didn't have to feel too bad about ruining if it came to that. I began my conversion by constructing a fully articulated tail using:
  • A Pipe Cap (For the tip)
  • Armored Conduit (For providing a rigid skeleton)
  • Pipe Adapters (For making it detachable)
  • 4 AWG Bare Copper Wire (For holding the pose)
  • Electrical Tape (For keeping the wire pair twisted)

Mounted to the spine using JB Weld and a modified pipe adapter it screws into:

Rigid enough to support itself:

And rigid enough to support the doll, too:

I added padding to make it more... cuddly...

And then I gave it some new fabric for an inner skin until I apply the fur:

Continued:

I used Armature wire wrapped in electrical tape for protection, to create pose-able skeletons for a pair of large removable ears:

Then I made some patterns and cut some fur for them:

After that, I stuffed them and added stitching under the fur to hold it all in place and give them that dished shape an inner ear should have:

I traced a rough pattern for cuts of different fur as well as to keep the fur flowing outward from the nose in all directions:
IMG_20171107_130240.jpg
IMG_20171107_130240.jpg (1001.88 KiB) Viewed 6981 times
Then I applied a lot of fur over the course of a few more hours, cutting, testing, re-cutting and applying.

At the current stage, the fur has not been styled or trimmed at all. I may shorten the pile, not sure yet.

My reaction, too. I look forward to seeing how this project evolves. I am awed by your artistry.

...Continued

Not as big an update this time I'm afraid, the last involved work over the course of a few months that I'd been waiting to post.

Recently I completed the fur for the tail, which took about 4 hours of cutting and hand sewing and really fit my schedule as I've been home sick most of the week:

IMG_20171109_165047.jpg
IMG_20171109_165047.jpg (1.26 MiB) Viewed 6759 times
I also worked on trimming the face-fur. I did not like the long pile in the white sections, the face reminded me of a Terrier, and I am not particularly fond of those...
IMG_20171111_122355.jpg
IMG_20171111_122355.jpg (938.98 KiB) Viewed 6759 times
An example of the ear movement. They cannot go far above this second point, somewhat limited by the inability of the fabric to stretch:
IMG_20171111_122409.jpg

IMG_20171111_122714.jpg
IMG_20171111_122714.jpg (814.65 KiB) Viewed 6759 times
I have begun tinkering with ideas for the paw pads. Originally I had bought a yard of faux leather I intended to just cut patches from and apply them to the bottoms of the feet, then I realized I wanted them 3d, and flat would be lazy, so I cut them in a way I could stuff them with padding, and then found that none of the glues I have from superglue to fabric glue could adhere the fuzzy backing.
IMG_20171111_125533.jpg
IMG_20171111_125533.jpg (923.09 KiB) Viewed 6759 times
My new plan is to create a mold using sculpting clay I already have on-hand for the pads and then mix my acrylic paints to make a desirable color, combine with silicone, and pour the molds full, then use those. I have no idea if that will achieve the look I want, as I've never done anything like that. This is pretty much all experimentation.

(Known) Items left on my agenda:
  1. [SKELETON] - Modify the legs with new joints for the ankles, swivels for the thighs and shins
  • [HEAD] - Work on the mouth area, either create lips or find some or style the fur in that area better. Suggestions?
  • [FEET] - Paw and toe pads for the feet
  • [FEET] - Apply patterned fur to the feet, styling around claws and pads, and trimming to a shorter pile
  • [BODY] - Create or find silicone nipples for the breasts, or just leave the fabric ones if they look ok
  • [BODY] - Apply patterned fur to the entire body, trimming to a shorter pile on the throat, breasts, stomach, inner thighs, and groin
  • [HANDS] - Find acrylic claws, or create flaws for the fingers, create pads if they seem feasible after the feet are done

The project is evolving well, and great that you have a road map and a plan to work with.

Regarding any further head suggestions, while I am not sure about oral functionality ( as my expertise is minmal with fabric type dolls) I would refer you the experts and have a look at what teddy babes does,

http://dollforum.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=35

or

coyote 9 at Velour vixens

http://dollforum.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=252

and even big sexy plush

https://bigsexyplush.com/gallery/

As they may have further concepts, ideas, applications and products to assist with your project.

Trust this helps.
