My Size Barbie Mod - 3d Print files for Download

Post by MannequinFan »

Since there are more and more members here starting to use 3d printers, I thought I would share some of my print files for the My Size Barbie.
Some members have expressed interest in making the MSB "usable", so here is a new set of hips for her that gives her a nice bum, full range of motion for the hips and is Fleshlight capable.
It's designed for the Sex in a Can sleeve which can still be purchased on Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Fleshlight-Sex-Ca ... B003TQQ72M
I think the new Fleshlight "GO" sleeve should also work.
Fun project for someone with a printer and an MSB needing a little "upgrading". :D

Some may know that I started my Abby project as a MSB mod, but moved to a fully printed design.
These are the earlier parts for the MSB that I've polished up some. These should be printable on any machine with at least a 5.5" (140mm) cube print volume.
No support material is needed to print these parts.

The parts consist of a two piece pelvis, waist connector ring, two hubs and hub caps and R&L leg pieces with connector rings. 11 printed pieces total.
The hemispheres are inexpensive steel parts that can be purchased here: http://www.kingmetals.com/Catalog/ItemC ... =208&NSM=Y
The hub and hub caps are assembled with #6 x 5/8" panhead sheet metal screws and the hemi is held on with one #8 x32 x 1" flathead machine screw.
A hex nut is inserted in the hub under the cap.

The basic parts can be glued together with epoxy and 1/8" wood dowels used for registration.
The leg pieces each require a pair of these magnets: https://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail. ... -P&cat=173

And now the files.
After download, just change the .PDF extension to .ZIP and extract the .stl files.
I'm hoping someone can have some fun with this while getting into 3d printing!

Great! Please let me know how it works for you, and feel free to PM me if you have any problems or questions! Have fun!

P.S.
I'll do some print previews and list the plastic usage and print times for the parts so you can get a comparison to the way they were printed on my Afinia. The large pelvis part and the leg parts need to be printed with a loose infill to save time and plastic. The infill I used on my Afinia is a grid pattern about 1/4" (6mm). The parts are light and more than strong enough for a doll.

Yes, I printed out some of the parts a while back when I first started with the MSB.
I've improved them since, but here's some pics.
The parts fit close to the MSB but not perfect, so there's a little blending required with some filler.
I didn't take the time to finish and paint these as I moved on to making Abby a fully printed doll, but when painted I think they should look pretty good.

For the MSB, make one straight cut just above the hip.
I used a foam board template to trace a straight line around the waist, then drilled small holes close together on the line and connected the holes to make the cut...

Here are the print times and plastic usage with my Afinia printer using a .20mm layer height.
The plastic cost would be about $12 using an average of $32/1000 gram spool.
The upper pelvis is a long print at over 10 hours. It could also be split vertically to reduce the print time for each piece.

Prints---grams---h:m---infill type

leg cup---52.50---3:41---loose infill
leg cup---52.50---3:41---loose infill

leg ring---10.10---0:41---medium infill
leg ring---10.10---0:41---medium infill

hub---21.90---1:40---medium infill
hub---21.90---1:40---medium infill

hub cap---3.00---0:14---tight infill
hub cap---3.00---0:14---tight infill

pelvis upper---147.80---10:35---loose infill
pelvis lower---37.90---2:42 ---medium infill
waist ring---13.70---0:53---medium infill

Total grams: 374.4
Total printing time: 26.7 hours

Here are the split pelvis files...

Print time is about 5:30 for each half at .20mm layer height.
This may also make sanding/finishing a little easier in the butt crack area.

Since I'm using a different kind of printer (photo cure resin type) I'll need to adjust the files before print. I'll see how it works out.

Yikes, that resin is really expensive. 8O
Are you using a Form1 printer by any chance?
FYI, I can also save the files in .STEP (.STP) format if you are using a solid modeling program like Solidworks.
NURBS surfaces may be easier to work with than the triangle mesh.

Yes, I am using Form 1 indeed. I also would like to see if I can get the files printed using services like Shapeways. That way, even if owners of MS Barbie without a printer can also order the parts. The SLS nylon seems to be a better choice of material than my photo resin anyway.

I am using Rhino so if you have .STEP files that would be great indeed. Many thanks.

Yay! I'm using Rhino also! Rhino 4.
I'll just post the Rhino files for you then.

I think Shapeways might get a bit expensive for most folks for larger prints like these.
The nice thing about the filament printers is that you don't need to have a shell modeled.
The print software automatically gives the outer surface a thickness and fills the inside with a lattice.
Does the Form1 do that for you or do you need to actually have a shell thickness modeled?

Great!! Thank you.

Form 1 does not hollow out the item so I'll have to make a shell manually, otherwise Form 1 will print a fully solid model. Since I'll need to do that anyway, I might as well upload to Shapeways to see how much it will cost. Definitely not cheap though.

Meshmixer to the rescue!
A perfect 2mm shell with one command!

Doing this in Rhino would be a nightmare.
Meshmixer, a must have program. And it's free!
http://www.meshmixer.com/

It makes a huge file though with all the extra geometry.
DD try this one out and see if it will work with the Form1...

For Shapeways SLS you'd need to put a hole in the bottom to empty the trapped powder.

Excellent work! I've been messing with meshmixer before but did not know it can do that!

Thanks again!!

BTW, the Rhino files opens fine except that we are working with different unit system, imperial vs metric. So need to adjust by 25.4

One question about the steel hemi, I think if we paint them, sooner or later the service will be scratched by the magnets?

You can change the unit setting in Rhino and the program will scale everything for you.
I like to work in imperial because I can relate to the units a little better, but I change to mm before saving the .stl files. The .stl files are all in mm.

In Meshmixer just go to edit and pick the command called "Hollow". Works like a dream.
A dialog will come up with options for offset distance and others. It will even put the holes in the bottom for you.

Regarding the hemi question, the magnets won't scratch the hemi as they are recessed enough to leave a small gap. There is an issue with the paint being marred by the pressure of the leg cup against it though. What I did for Abby was to first give the hemis 3 good coats of paint, then give them at least 3 coats of a clear matte acrylic like Krylon. Next I rubbed some bar soap on the leg cup surface which helps to lubricate it some. This seems to be working to protect the paint. The only caveat to this is the legs don't hold a pose as well, but they move nicely in play.

I'm glad you brought this up because I may have a solution to this issue.
I found these thin anti-skid rubber pads at my local Home Depot...
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-1 ... /203661152

I think these could be recessed into the leg cup. They are 1/16" (1.6mm) thick so they could stick up just a little to keep the leg cup from rubbing on the paint. I may give this a test here to see if it will work.

Here's the leg cup with the pads recessed 1mm...
