If you click on the EVA4 links in my signature you can see some of the magnetic joints I've made for the mannequin.

If you're just getting started with 3d modeling, Autodesk has a suite of free software you could take look at called 123D.
123D design is a desktop app you can download, and Tinkercad is an online app which might be fun to start with.
http://www.123dapp.com/
I've not used either one, but I think 123D design is like a stripped down simplified version of Autodesk Inventor.
I haven't looked at Sketchup in a long time so it may be good too.

Another free program I use a lot is Meshmixer.
This is a great little program for working with 3d meshes. Tons of things you can do with it.
http://www.meshmixer.com/
Thanks for the info. Been messing around with 123D, Blender, Meshmixer, and sketchup. At this stage in the game, I'm so new to all of the 3d stuff that as I play with each program and watch videos, I'm learning concepts and ideas that can be used globally.

I will for sure check out that thread. I have looked at it before, but I may have missed the magnetic joints. My thoughts for sure are to eventually do some mods the the mannequin to give her the BJD feel, but it's going to be a while as I'm still assembling the printer and still early stage learning.

Thanks again for the tips!

Jdog you might want to check out the Manuel Bastioni Lab add-on for Blender.
http://www.manuelbastioni.com/index.php

I played around a little with the new 1.4.0 version last night.
This is the new fantasy elf character they just added... :D

Well, I know I haven't rolled out the first Abby yet  , but I'm looking ahead at some improvements for Abby two.

So far I'm really happy with how the upper body, breasts and arms are looking, but I've been searching for ways to improve the lower half for a more voluptuous shape and to get away from those knobby kneed MSB legs.
In my quest I discovered that Character Creator had a standard body template you can download for making 3d clothing, etc.
I thought the body shape - especially the ass - was quite nice...

So here's the adaptation with the new head and lower half.
She'll be 40" tall barefoot and about 42" to 43" with the high heel shoe feet.
This is just roughed out- I'll need to blend the two sculpts together with Meshmixer...

Glad to see you still at it.
Even if Abby 1 is never finished, it was a learning process and good R&D.
I still need to finish Aurora, but really want to move on to other things as well.
So is life.
Going downtown. Gonna see my gal. Gonna sing her a song. I'm gonna show her my ding dong! C&C

Thanks JM!
Hehe, I think Mattel is out of the MSB business now though.
The last I saw, a company called Just Play was making them.
The legs were the last remnants of the MSB scan, so there will be no part now that is based off the MSB.

That's true - Abby 1 will probably just end up being a one-off R&D project.
She's actually pretty much done but I'm not really happy with some things.
I had to sculpt some kneecap stops with Apoxie putty to keep the legs from bending backwards, so she has really knobby looking knees. The first head is OK just needs to be painted, but I think the new Makehuman elf head design is going to fit her much better.

Well, looking at this for comparison, here's how Abby one will look with original body and the skinny MSB based legs and shoe feet.
Not too bad really, so I'll probably go ahead and finish this version.
Back of the knees are a little clunky looking, but a strong joint is needed to support her weight.
Any thoughts are welcome...

Looks fine to me.
Do you have any close up diagrams of the knee assembly?
Straight and full bent?

Hey there RK, thanks for posting.
It's the knee I designed for modifying the MSB here: http://dollforum.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 73#p899673
140 degree bend...

Ok, all you need is a spring loaded, articulated, retractable cover that looks like the back of a knee.
You should be able to plan something out on a paper napkin while your having a cup of Folgers. :D

RK
I'd do it for you, but I'm out of napkins and town it 10 miles away.

Hehe thanks RK, but I think some punk knee socks/leg warmers made from some fingerless gloves might do the trick!

It's a little pricey, but I've GOT to have this wig for Abby!

Yeah, socks is easier.
That's what I do w/ Aurora.

Cool wig. Maybe you can find another source that's cheaper?

I'm still trying to decide on some different legs for Abby one. :drinking:
Here's Abby with the thicker more voluptuous legs from the Manuel Bastioni Lab model.
I'm not sure if I like this or not. A little too chunky maybe?

The original legs make her look taller.
I do like the B-Labs lower leg style though.

Thanks for your input RK. Yes I agree they do make her look a little taller.
The heels probably help some too.
I found a cheaper punk spiky wig that might work for the punk rocker girl look...

This is a quick and dirty photoshop job to visualize it with Abby's original head.
She'll need some feather earrings to go with it...
