Mannequins in the UK

Post by MRmannequin »

I have seen some lovely looking Mannequins, and they look so life like and realistic. Really would like one or possibly two, with the idea of dressing them up, and taking some photos. Just no idea what way to go, the plastic route, or the fiberglass one. I know fiberglass will be a lot more expensive, and probably a lot more fragile.

I have seen plenty on the web for sale, some really sexy looking ones that say fiberglass. I am very skeptical that they are fiberglass, as the very low price, and location being China, puts me off.

I am looking a mannequin with a good pose, not too tall, oh and of course must have a sexy figure  . Just can't seem to see anything based in the UK.

Rootstein is a well known high end mannequin maker that is based in the UK.
I think they are mostly fiberglass and pretty expensive new.
You'd have to contact their UK office to find out how to get one.

Thanks for the link, I have done a search on Rootstein , and as you say, are expensive. I suppose it is just a case of tracking down a second hand one. Just they do not seem to come up that often.

The ones you've seen on the web made in China are probably Loutoff and they are indeed fiberglass (but the same company makes plastic mannequins as well). They cost around 100EUR in the EU. If you can't find a UK importer, there should be some German companies that ship to the UK.

As to the quality... I own one and I find the sculpt quite detailed and realistic. Especially the hands are surprisingly well sculpted considering the price. However the manufacturing quality is somewhat lacking. Expect multiple small paint defects. One of my Iza's hands has very visible scratches and uneven paint coat, to the point part of it is almost white and other part has visible paint drops.
These things are unthinkable with high-end European mannequins, but they usually cost upwards of 500EUR. If you are OK with this price-tag then I would suggest checking out the already mentioned Rootstein (UK), Hindsgaul http://www.hindsgaul.com (DK) and New John Nissen http://www.new-john-nissen.com (BE).

Finding a second hand one seems like a good option, I've seen used high-end mannequins go for as little as 100EUR on ebay. Have in mind that some may actually cost more used, especially if they are from discontinued rare and beautiful collections. You should check out German ebay, for some reason collecting vintage mannequins seems popular in Germany and there is a lot of used high quality mannequins offered there.

Thanks for taking the time to write all that. Very useful, and interesting :) .

Spotted some nice looking ones, with some good poses. Yes I have seen the Loutoff make, they do look good, but obviously at the price they are probably not very good quality. Suppose it is a case of keeping an eye on ebay.

Thanks again :) .
