Clothing Alterations. A dummy's journey. The school skirt

Post by scooter_ca »

Welcome to part 3 of Daria's clothing alteration series.
Daria, like many dolls, has lots of clothes that "almost" fit.
Her and I know nothing about sewing, but how hard can it be to make simple alterations to outfits?
This series documents our voyage of discovery.

In Part 1 we learned how to use our Dressmaker II sewing machine - Part 1 - The Sewing Machine.
In Part 2 we attempted to alter a bra - Part 2 - The Bra.

So here we are at ...
Part 3 - The school skirt.

When Daria first moved in, I bought her a women's small school skirt.

I love it, but it's too big. It wraps around me twice. It's also too long.
Image

It keeps falling down, exposing my booty.
Image

The first step is to adjust the width.
I want the skirt to go around me once and a tiny bit more.
I only want it a tiny bit more because I want it to split a bit exposing my upper thigh when I'm walking.
Image

I'll pin the cut edge for now and sew it when I sew the hem.
Image

Now I cut the skirt to a shorter length.
Allow some extra to make a 2cm hem.
The skirt has a regular pattern, so it was easy to cut it evenly.
Image

I pinned up the hem. It's sort of tricky because of the pleats.
It bunches because the pleats make the skirt have more material at the bottom than at the waist.
A quick ironing helped.
Image

I then sew all along the the pinned hem.
I discovered you need to remove the pins as you go, or else they get in the way.
Also you need to make minor adjustments along the way so the pattern on the hem matches up with the skirt pattern.
By doing this you get a nice even hem.
Image

I go really slow to avoid finger pokes.
Image

Now it's time to iron. Always remember, this is the hot side!
Image

Ironing will give it a nice crisp pleat.
Image

Hey Dasha, try using two hands and really put some weight on it.
Image

That's the way. You go girl !
Image

The label says "No Ironing", but we ignored that.
Image

All done. Can I try it on now ?
Image

Unfortunately, that's all the time we have for today.
In the next installment, Daria tries on the skirt and we discover a problem.
She also plans to model the finished results.
Check back it a couple of days for the conclusion.

Thanks,
Daria and scooter

very informative series lots of us need to learn this. it should be mandatory that all kids learn how to sew and use hand tools starting in grade school.

Agreed....basic clothing repairs class should be mandatory. Hell....a basic everything class.

This is the hot side :haha4:

You should start a warning sign series. The things that should not need a warning and yet sadly still do

Great series again. And well done to both of you

Great photo set! Super cute and informative too. :D

You get so much expression in her poses, it's impressive. This whole series is fun, and yes that bra is looking sweet!

And, now I know which is the hot part of the iron, thank you Daria!

Thank you everyone for your comments. I read them all and really welcome the feedback.

I'm sorry scooter and I left you hanging in the middle there, but getting all the pictures ready is hard work.
Sometime we need to take a break and get in some cuddle time.
We worked on the rest of the pictures last night, so we could finish the post today.

I'm glad you like my bra that was the focus of Part 2.
It's so nice to have something that you can throw on that fits perfectly.

Also, I was very serious about the "hot side" of the iron warning. :shakefist:
Me and all my TPE and silicone friends have a lower melting point than you organiks.
We have to be very careful around hot items.

But enough chatter, let's get to work.....

We forgot to reattach the Velcro faster.
I used the seam ripper from the sewing kit to remove it from the discarded piece.
I then sewed it on to the skirt.
Image

Oh oh! We have a problem.
Even when the waist band is tight around my hips, there's a lot of slack at the tummy.
This is the down-side of having a sexy caboose.
Image

A couple of alligator clips show how it should look.
Image

Back to the machine to sew two darts where the clips were.
I learned that a dart is a tuck in the material to make it fit better.
I thought darts were pointy things that fat bald guys threw at walls.
Image

NOW it's time to model my skirt.
Wow Dasha! That looks great.
Image

I really like it. It feels so much better without pins and clips.
Image

You look amazing Dasha.
I need to photograph you in a better setting than just our living room.

The teachers at my old school have been on strike for 5 weeks.
I bet there's nobody around.

Let's go!

This was my old locker! Everything looks so much smaller now.
Image

Shhh. Nobody's around. Time for one quick picture.
Image

TOP SECRET. Behind me is the formula for warm TPE.
It stays at body temperature no matter what the outside temperature is.
Image

Bye-bye. That's all for now. See you real soon..
Hugs,
Daria

Final note from scooter:
So this is the end of the school skirt alteration.
I'm really happy how it turned out.
I hope this gives others the incentive to try their own alterations.

In the next installment we are going to modify a shirt that Daria finds impossible to put on.
It has no buttons and it doesn't stretch.
No matter what Daria tries, she can't contort herself into it.
We will figure out a way to make it work.

Thanks,
scooter.

p.s. One final final note.
While some pictures have been edited, no edits or enhancements were made to Daria.
She really is this cute everyday.

great job on the skirt, it's a little short but some like it that way i guess. can't wait for the shirt project, i guess you could cut up the back and sew in some velcro to close it up.

Cool to see a doll making her way in the world. I know Sammy wants me to learn how to sew when we have the time to learn. But honestly I hated that part of Home Economics.
I have to agree with Carlys Guy. That skirt is a little shorter then I'd be comfy wearing. Even if it was just around the house for Sammy.

Hi carlys_guy and Chastity.
Your right that the skirt did end up a little short.
There are two reasons for this.
1) We didn't want to go through all this work of fixing a long skirt and still have it to long. Too short was better than too long.
2) I wanted the waistline to hug Daria's hips, but Daria has such rice rounded hips that the skirt works its way back up to her waist, which makes it look even shorter.

I'm not complaining though. I love the skirt.
It may be too short to go out in public, but it will be a lot of fun around the house.

Bingo!
I've already purchased a big roll of white Velcro.

Thanks,
scooter
